Running on 1 rotor, igniter prob or what?

When I got out of work. It was sleet & freezing rain out. So I started my 84' GSL and went inside to let it warm up. When I came back out. It seemed to idle funny. To my shock it was running on one rotor! I was stunned and gave it some gas for like 20 sec. so it wouldn't die when I pushed the choke in. While I sat in the car trying to figure out what to do, it suddenly went back to normal. It continued to warm up as I scraped the ice off my windshield. Then I drove home with no probs. It drove like a champ. I'm thinking it could be one of the igniters or something in the ignition. This never happened b4. I just put new NGK's, Cap, & rotor last week. What gives? What items should I check or replace?
Thanx for any replies.

Theres a valve (ACV valve maybe, not sure what its called) that is designed to cause one rotor to shut down. Its for part throttle cruising. You either caught it when it was on or its starting to fail.

how do you know for sure it's running on one rotor. what if the igniters are just blown?

if you install headers on the car, isn't there a blockoff or something for the ACV? I have this problem as well, but mine always seems to be on one rotor...Previous owner had headers put on, But I don't know where to look to see if these blockoffs were placed(there's supposed to be two of them right?)....

Well it sounded REALLY lumpy. Then ran fine after about 20 sec.

That's the shutter valve, not really designed to shut one rotor down. It has a valve that restricts flow to I think the rear primary opening in the manifold on deacceleration.

Hope is not what happenned to mine. It did that for a few months on start up and then the rear rotor went. Had to rebuild engine.

Here's the sound of what that used to be like on startup. Pay no attention to the noise level hehehe, it had a huge exhaust leak at the time.

In this folder, play "lawnmover.mp3"

Damn now I'm worried. I'm hoping it's something in the ignition. I'm gonna check all the connections from the coils to the dist. to plugs, etc. The engines got 106k. It ran fine when I drove it home.

One way to see if rear rotor is having problems is of course, to do a compression test. Do both and compare.

Sounds to me like it is just running rich cause the choke is on. Mine does that too. If you push the choke in it just cleans right up.

Well the car started up this morning with no hesitation. Same thing when I got out of work. She ran fine all the way home.

Probably just fouled a couple of plugs due to the cold weather/choke combination. It will run rich that way, so maybe it was just carbon buildup on the plugs, which then blew clear when you revved her up. I wouldn't be too concerned about it unless it happens a lot. Good luck!
