thinking of getting a 1st gen rx-7

Ok, im thinking of getting a first gen rx-7 as a project/track car. Good idea yes or no? Goal is to track the car not prfessonal or anything but something to have fun in and also to drag the car. Goal for that is high 12's low 13's. How much will a first gen cost me? It comes with the 12A right??? How capable is that motor or am i better off jsut getting a 1st gen shell and get a 13b..will a 13b even fit..sorry for all the newbie questions but i was at button willow today and ran into the guy that runs i guess the race shop there and was talking to him and he really got me interested in the rx-7, and i was looking for a project car anyways.

Just get a GSL-SE? It has a 13b already in it...but if you want to put a 3rd gen engine in it or a Cosmo (I believe someone has done that before ) it has all been done. Hell go 3 rotor if your willing to spend some dough!!!!!!!

Is the 12a capable? Hell yes! Check out the thread: 12A Runs 10.19 @132 Mph

The first Gen RX-7 is a blast to work on and to drive. Whether you want it to be drag racer, road racer or autocrosser, the 1st Gen wears all these hats pretty well.

Yes, definitely get a 1st gen! The thing I really like about mine, is that the engine bay is empty enough that you can really get at stuff fairly easily, so you can do all the work yourself. For instance, I was able to change the bushings in my steering system without ever puttin the car on jackstands: I did it all through the top of the engine bay!

If you get a 1st gen, either 12a model or the 13b GSL-SE, first go to a great comedy club and spend all night laughing your *** off. Then go catch a late show - something like that new "Signs" movie.

The next day, if you can handle your face aching from the nonstop grinning from the comedy club and adrenaline from the movie, the RX-7 might be for you.

If grins and thrills aren't your thing go buy a stock Honda grocery getter.

I paid $4,000 for my SE, but then it was clean, pristine, and celebrity owned. Also Canadian money *L*

You should be able to find one in the $2,500 USD range.

I have an A4 too, it's a great car but I still prefer to drive the "7" whenever possible.

You should be able to get a nice body, upgrade the suspension, put on some low-profile wheels-n-tires, install a nice free-flow exhaust system and replace "whatever" for under 5k.

I've had my car for over a year now and i still haven't spent 5k on it (including buying the car) Even with the 5 speed install it wont even touch that!!!!

If you get 12a you must go for some sort of porting and free-flowing exhaust. Did someone say Bridge Port 12a?!

I spent $2200 USD on my '84 GS, and it was in pretty good condition (its only problems were a slightly leaky exhaust, some minor body work, and a couple cuts in the vinyl door trim).

oh yea on the recycler ad above it seemed like it was a fake ad. Talked to the guy on the phone but he was a no show and no call either...agreed to meet at his parents house, but when we got there his freakin parents seemed a bit hostile that someone was looking for "jimmy" oh well what ever.
