thinking of buying rx7

I came here hoping to get every1's 5 cents.
There is this guy that will sell me a 1985 rx7 glse.
he said 1 of the pistons (well it's not pistons but you know what i mean) is down on psi. then the others so i am thinking new motor. BUT he says it runs and drives.
well it was up on rack. high up in the air. so all i seen was drivers side body, front side, back side. could not see inside or right side or ontop. well all of what i could see was verry nice. From what i could tell from under it verry nice. new exhuast, new tires i know. ok, so, what would it cost for newer swap for this?? i have done little research. i think it has 13b motor if it is it how much would that run me???? well anyways i can get the car for $550. So i am going down there in the morning to get a look at the rest of it but if everything checks a ok what do you think??? thanx all you guys first rx7 project. I have 11 second b16a turbo 1986 honda CRX si. Thats my street car. so to you guys i was reading in kills storys yes some them little 4 bangers are fast. And i know cuss i own 1. And i love it.. Well thanx every1 for all your time and help hope to here from you all. as i am going to take last look at it in the moring well here it is morning. should say later on hu hu. well lates all!!

A GSL-SE for only $550 in Los Angeles? There would be MANY people all over that deal. Any car that goes 11 seconds is fast by any means.. cost for swaps varies, depends on what you do and where you go...and there are many places in and around L.A. Good luck to you

Their called rotors hun, not pistons.
And if its only 550 bucks then yeah .. like half of the first gen forum will be there tomorrow to buy it.

well if one of the rotors is down on PSI, then it probably has a blown apex seal which would require a motor rebuild.

A new GSL-SE short block from a good rotary shop should cost somewhere around ~$1700. Now if you are looking to swap a newer enigne setup, thats a different story. Its a project that you should tackle yourself, and you can turn up more than enough good information by using the search function or even looking at the TII sticky at the top of this forum.

$550 is a pretty damn good price for a GSL-SE which is the gem among first gen rx-7's. I payed $500 for my GS which was low on compression, and I thought that was a steal at the time.

Go ahead and get it man... it'll be a fun car, and much more fun to drive than that FWD CRX you have once you've unlocked the power of the rotary.

well, the fastest setup ever would be someones insane 4 rotor setup, but I'm guessing you dont want to fork out 100 grand for that.

You probably dont want to fork out 30 grand for a 3 rotor setup either.

So that leaves you with a turbo 13b. You can go TII, 13b-RE, or 13b-REW. TII was the turbo engine that came in the 87-91 cars. 13B-RE was the sequintual twin turbo engine that came in the 90-95 cosmos which only came out in japan, and the 13B-REW (also had sequintual twin turbo)came out in the 93-02 rx-7.

Probably the best setup without going completely overboard on $$$ would be getting a 13B-RE and ditching the twin turbos and going with a large single turbo, go look up directfreak's setup as thats pretty much what I'm talking about.

i'm just messing with ya man!

I'd probably go the 13B-RE route... should cost ya around $8K. I could be off a little though. The setup would be fast as hell.

But with 15 grand to work with... you should be able to make 11's.. if not better. I'm not really the expert on insane quarter times though so if anyone else wants to chime in, please do.

actually, if you go the cheep route... you can get a 20b tripple rotor in there for around 15 grand, it just wouldnt be top notch everything.

here is an excel sheet for a 20b install compairing the minumum to the full blown works. The project here is shown to vary form 13k to 43k. The price sheet was made for a install in a 3rd gen, but most of the information is still valid for the first gen.

With a rotary, youll spend half as much to go just as fast as a 4-banger typically. Shoot on over to the WEST forum for places and shops...also check out www.socal7s.org and come out for a meet.

To get a true idea of what it'll take to make the ReX as fast as your CRX and do it the right way, private message MIKE-P-28 and ask him how much he's sunk into his moneypit.. MIKE, if you see this, I say it in the nicest way possible.. he he The simple fact, in my twisted mind, is that first-gen RX7's with rotary engines are not and will not ever be true quarter mile cars, when built with a sane budget.. sure they handle nice and all, but they're just not blazing acceleration cars...
