well its odd to me anyways,
i picked up a 82 with 122k miles today automatic (dont laugh)!! in good shape! the funny thing about it is that it has a small back seat in it.....i never seen one on a 1st gen....i have on the 2nd gen......so are there many of these cars (1st gen) with back seats in them??? hmmm???

i believe they had them in Japan. So someone might have imported it and put it on the car.

I just saw a nice 79' auto, for sale $2k, and it had a back seat too. I thought that was interesting...

The theory I hear most often is "dealer-installed option" 'cause dealers could probably get them from Japan w/ no problems. Funny thing, every FB & FC I've seen with a rear seat has had an automatic tranny.

Remember, 2-seaters are considered anti-social in Japan, so those rear seats were standard equipment over there.

apparently the only reason the Us didn't get seats as std. was due to stricter crash test laws in the US

They are pretty useless unless you have kids

In Germany 2 seaters were all but verbotten, either by insurance companies, taxes, or highway regulations depending on who's telling the story, which is why Porsche 911s had those sick jokes that loosely resembled rear seats.

I'm thinking (just thinking, mind you, I have no info to support this) that it coulda been the same in Japan.

Forgot to mention:
When I started ripping the remnants of interior out of my '82 GSL (has a manual trans, but not original motor so...), guess what I found underneath the storage bins? An ancient pair of little Mazda seatbelts! They have a little world symbol on the release buttons, just like the '82 GLC I once killed.
I'm betting that some previous owner looked at that tiny little seat, laughed, and replaced it with some junkyard storage bins. But the bolt for the belts requires reaching above the dif to remove, so they just left them.

Hang onto that seat, wam. It's rare for those of us who don't live in Japan.

yea, its rare alright. I'd actually prefer the seats over the bins. those bins are pretty useless IMO. Anyone got a good set of black seats?
