Is there an easy way to do the motor mounts?

I did the clutch in my 84 last weekend, and wanted to install my delrin motor mounts at the same time. However, I couldn't find a way to jack up the front of the engine enough to get it off the mount studs. Is there an easy way or a trick to changing the engine mounts?

The studs come out from the back. Line everything up then put the studs though.

Four bolts on the front cover below the main pulley.

Remove bolts
take out front mount bar
swap motor mounts
profit

How did or do you know if your motor mount is bad? I am getting a small vibration with the car in motion and am think that they could be the problem. Thanks for the help.

While the engine is running, pull the throttle cable hard or have someone rev the engine. Your motor will twist if the mounts are bad. Bad engine and tranny mounts can lead into mis-shift at high RPM/speed shifting.

Follow jeff's procedure plus a floor jack and piece of 2x4 to go between the jack and the housing to lift the motor IF you have no engine lift.

I concur with Wacky. I'll also add that when you consider swapping your tranny mount, think about getting the competition version. So far I've only found them at Racing Beat. I've swapped them into three vehicles so far and they work better than the racer's trick of drilling through a stock trans mount and adding a bolt. Hard rubber is better than metal to metal = less noise and wont wear out in a few k miles.

i found out that my motor mount was bad from lookin at the shifter. At low rpm's lettin out the clutch the shift **** would rock back and forth pretty violent. As well as a vibration in the shifter. Changed motor mounts with the hockey pucks. Problem fixed wont go back.

if you use an engine hoist, the will be much easier to do. if you don't have one, Wacky's method will work just fine.

Just whatever you do do not jack it up with the oil pan! I had an oil leak on mine when I first got it and it turned out a previous owner did... There was an indention on the pan shaped like the round part of a floor jack that warped the metal that seals around the edges where the gasket goes.

Anyway... I have the Mazda competition mounts on my 79 and my 90 and love them. Instant difference. The FC was a bit harder to do with the AC and PS and all those other luxuries in the way that my 79 doesn't have.

Don't be surprised if your mounts crumble into chunks when you remove them.

How i changed mine was actually jacking it up at the oil pan, but with a cushion of course. Either use a block of wood or what I did was use a rubber floor mat that i folded twice for the cushion. But of course before jacking up the motor mounts, remove all the bolts then jack up the engine. Once engine is up, to make my life easier, I removed the engine mount frame so I have flexibility and in order to clean the engine mount frame as well.

Hope that helps.

Do it the way Wacky suggest at the trans bellhousing. I use a block of wood over the floorjack head.
