Here's a closer pic of what cdrad is trying to show ya.

It's a 12mm, and it has a bullet connector that's a BITCH to get off. I tried on my engine, and pulled the middle of the sensor right out! I tried on a friend's car and had to cut it loose from the harness because I just couldn't.

It was $32 Canadian to replace it directly from Mazda. I'll dig up the part number in a sec.

The Mazda part number is
8569-18-510A

For 1981-1992 original engines

Mazdatrix lists another one for "replacement" rear housings

http://www.mazdatrix.com/o-misc.htm

Translation of Mazdatrix part number to Mazda part number (for rare "replacement housing" version): G607-18-51X0

In reality, chances are the connection is what is failing, rather than the sender.

True,

but in trying to disconnect the bullet connector from the sender (to clean it and put it back) I ended up breaking the sender.

On two different engines!

So that's why I gave him the part number.

Wow... I tried searching up this thread today, since I remembered posting in it, but since the words "sensor" and "gauge" don't appear in it, it was a *bugger* to find.

So this post should add the words "water temp sensor", and "water temp gauge / gage / guage sending unit" to this thread, to make it easier to search in the future.

And I'm archiving it.

There, that aughta do it!
