Dude... at the very least include:

- a link to the page talking about the 'mod'
and/or
- a description of the 'mod'
and/or
- a picture of the 'mod'

because I don't have a clue what you're talking about and I don't think it's as aparent as you think it is. This thread is useless without that.

Jon:
The TB (Throttle Body) mod is commonly performed in the 2nd gen cars. Basically it removes the outer secondary throttle plates (acts like a choke when the engine is cold) and usually bypasses the coolant line(to reduce intake temperature) that is used for the wax pellet (used for fast idle and controlling the outer secondary throttle plates). Many times the dashpot is removed as well. The TB mod is mostly a simplifcation (like some people do with the Nikki carbs) but removal of the outer secondary throttle plates reduces pressure drop and helps high end a little. The downside is that you may have to bump up the idle a bit and you may have stalling or rough idle in cold weather until the car is warmed up.

Greg: I am glad the the TB mod worked out for you. Let us see some pics and lets us know how it behaves in cold weather.

i have taken pics, but cant upload them till i get home (im at my dads working on the car) ill upload the pics as soon as i get home, the only things connected to my TB now are the throttle cable, the TPS and the OMP actuator rod, i took EVERYTHING off, did some mild porting and polishing of the alluminum housing and blocked the coolant lines (those are gonna be used in the near future for my turbo coolant lines, as for im going turbo soon)

Cool T/Body mod

Gregs, it still does not say what you did for porting, i ported my se system from the plenum to the runners, opened up about 3/8 inch of metal in the center runners, took alot of aluminum thru out the system. What are you running for an air filter system ,stock box or kn cone filter? If you really want it to breathe, dump the se intake system and put the 86-88 intake and T/body on, the t/body is much larger and the whole system is less restrictive. rx7doctor

Yes, the SE TB is nearly identical to the 2nd gens with the exception of the size of the throttle plates. So just follow those instructions. Any slight differences will be easy to figure out.

GregS: It looks good. How is the idle/cold weather behavior? Did you have to increase the idle at all?

Hmm, I've been thinking about doing this mod. My reason is the car I have has 240k miles on it. When I start it cold, the idle goes up to like 4k and stays there until it warms up. I was thinking maybe since my earwax........er um, I mean the thermowax is soo old, maybe it's fubared and causing this. I don't want it to kill my motor since I know it's bad to idle soo high when cold so I pop the hood and manually push on the linkage to hold the idle down untill it warms.

Anyways, not trying to hyjack the thread but could bad thermowax cause this prob? If so, maybe the TB mod would be in my favor?

before the TB mod my car idled at lik 975 rpm's, and 4 out of 5 times it would die when its hella cold (flood out), i am shocked, but the car actually runs better in the cold after the TB mod, it doesn't die and the car idles smothly at 1000 rpms, cold startups and idles are smooth too (its been in the low teens here at night), i am extreemly happy with the results from this, with my cone filter intake, TB mod, wired open 5-6th ports and Rb header to straight through exhaust, my car is a freakin bat out of hell between 4-7.5k rpm's

Is it necessary to tell a mod to use the search button? Anyone with an -SE, a fake -SE, or other mazda FI system knows what a TB mod is.

Thanks for the review gregs. I have another intake/TB that I was going to clean up and port a little, but I was worried about the drivability with the TB mod.

Revn, If you can push the linkage and drop the idle, there may be some sticking/friction issues with your TB. Lubricate the linkage, and the throttle cable, maybe even replace your throttle spring. That may help.

Thanks, I will try that. yup I kind of have to push it and hold it because if I go too far, i hear a click and the linkage seems to close the butterflies and it shuts off. I'm not too concerned as i will soon be doing a 13bt swap but I would liike to get it running right in the mean time and it would help with selling the se motor.

I like the TB mod, I think it helps the throttle response a ton. Its hard to notice anything extra on top for my car, because I did the mod on the TB when I was doing the TII swap. I noticed alot of top end , but I don't know how much extra comes from the TB mod.

As far as cold weather is conscerned, now that the engine is SP, I've noticed the idle get slightly worse but not enough to warrant raising it. When its really cold(below freezing) sometimes it heasitates a split second if I open it up too quickly, but other than that It's a good cheap mod.
