Incidently, I don't mind paying taxes because it is nice to have roads, schools and a military, kind of feels like a civilization, you know?

Ray
Only 49% of ohio messed up.

they have higher Gas prices then down here, maybe they make it up with that.

The rust problems seem mainly a NE thing. I've seen 20 year old Japanese cars in Columbus, with no rust! They don't salt the roads there.

So if Ohio doesn't have taxes, who buys all that salt?
We have taxes, it's just not frequent (like "10% of the value of your car, every year") and not confiscatory. And there are places that are much better still.

Anyway, to answer your question, we get it all from underneath Lake Erie. (No foolin') And every year, they use up most of the salt reserves early in the season, before it gets cold, so the last half of winter the roads rarely get salted. Also, Cleveland has cut back on road maintenance, the side streets no longer get plowed or salted.

Also, isn't Ohio the state that messed up the last election and voted for Bush?
If you'll note, the population centers voted for Kerry. The middle of nowhere farmland type counties all voted Bush. They outnumber us...

- Pete (but they have soe *good roads* so we tolerate 'em. Oh and food.)

I've never heard of this!? Here in normal (at least to me) MN, tabs are $39.50 per year for cars older then 5 or 10 years I think. I don't know forsure, mine have always been 39.50.

It's screwed up here. They lowered the tax charge by $0.07 per $1,000 on real estate. Then everyone's appraisals on their houses skyrocketed. Thus, raising the tax bill for the year. I wish they'd charge higher taxes for purchases, and do away with this yearly tax crap. They're punishing people for succeeding, and being able to afford things.
You do not have to pay, depending on where you register the car. The counties in Virginia can use various methods for assessing personal property tax. If you shop around, some jurisdictions are much lower than others, or even nonexistant for certain cars.
