My 83 rex ia a Targa7,I was just curious what this is all about? Is this a dealer option or a minor body kit just for cosmetic purposes?Or does it have some extra goodies added within.

Well jennifer the 'targa' bands were sold from mazda dealers, then others copy'ed the stainless steel band.
The 'real' ones say 'mazda' on the sides. And the model rx7 you have,,s, gs,gsl, and gsl-se, would ID the goodies it came with. I'm not really hip on the bands myself, but i like the targa idea, real targa tops are cool
i think.

There were two types of targa bands, the one-piece units that were a rare dealer-installed option, and the aftermarket 3-piece "Targa 7" units that are more frequently encountered. The one-piece units are attached with adhesive, while the Targa 7 is attached with sheetmetal screws, requiring one to drill holes in the top. I have the one-piece stainless steel unit on my '80, it looks okay, different but no big whoop.
Here's more on the subject.

The Targa7 package was a dealer option package. It could be had on ANY RX-7. The true Targa7 package included the infamous silver band (the three-piece one) and the IMSA-style spoilers. Take a look at your front air-dam and, odds are, if it's urethane instead of fiberglass, you've got a real Targa7. There were no performance changes or add-ons; it is an appearance package only. It should look like this (minus the louvers):

If your car has a 'screw up ' sun roof, the whole panel
can be removed ,, 'for the summer '

Hehe, I've mastered the art of taking it off at a red light and tossing it in the back...

All from INSIDE the car... It's a lot more fun ding it with my nice light plexi-moonroof than my OEM metal sunroof...
