t2 engine + 1st gen transmission

there are alot of t2 swaps into 1st gens, almost all are using t2 transmissions. but, who here has tried using the 1st gen tranny??.
if you have, how long did it last?
after doing a search, i couldn't find anyone using one?
maybe it can't be used, who am i to say.

lol i sadly still have the FB transmission bolted to my TII. And i gotta say im impressed. i dont exactly baby it, ill mash thru the gears, redline it, boost just to hear the noise, basically i dont even think about it. thus far ive been hammerin on it for at least a year as a daily driver and its gettin worn, a little whiney, a lil shakey, however still workin strong. id prefer a proper TII transmission tho, not so much for strength as the better ratios.

The FC gear ratios are much better, true. Other than that, it'll work as long as you don't abuse it too hard. I understand they tend to grenade at about the 400 WHP mark, though.

thank you for the replies.
i'm planning to use the 1st gen tranny with the t2 engine, for the summer/fall. it's good to see i'm not the only one who is/has tried using the 1st gen tranny. i plan on ridin her hard (as always) until the snow comes back again. i will update how my transmission lasted in the fall.
peace

ushally only the input shaft bearing give up. If you do not try to spin the tires or do hard shifts under a lot of boost, it will live. treat it nice and have some fun. good luck

TII trannies easily break at the 450whp mark.

I don't see how an FB tranny can survive much more than 300 whp. It really is *alot* less beefy than a TII one.
I had broken (on many of my FB's) the original transmissions without boost.

If' you're going keep the FB tranny - I recommend shitty tires and a stock
clutch/pressure plate. - So it won't shock the the system when the power kicks in.

I still say, if you're going to do it, - do it right - it's really not much more work
to swap a TII unit in.

yeah i should have added that this is with a stock clutch and 13" winter tires, start launching with real grip an something will likely give.

Understand that when I say "grenade", I mean that you floor it in gear and the gear teeth promptly strip off. Aaron Cake did just that with two NA FC trannies (which are more or less identical to FB trannies): floor it in third gear at 420-odd WHP, no more third gear. If you do a lot of hard launches, you can break an NA tranny at near stock power levels. TII trannies will at least put up with some abuse at 450 WHP.

Nice thing about NA trannies is that they're a dime a dozen, so if you do break one it's not too big a deal.

i agree with the stock clutch+ crap tires. we broke all the teeth from 3rd on the IT car, it looked just like aaron cakes, except we had 160hp....

that being said, i would not hesitate to keep the NA trans in the car, if just to break the t2 swap into smaller simpler quicker pieces.

I'm sticking with an NA FC tranny in my car. The strongest clutch I'll use is an RB street strip pressure plate and an ACT "modified street disc" (it is kinda like an RB HD disc). Also an RB aluminum flywheel so there is less inertial shockloading when I let the clutch pedal up quick. Also keeping somewhat hard (old) tires out back.

that is my plan for next winter. it's more of a money thing right now.
i just can't wait that long. if i don't start drivin my car soon, i'm gonna go nuts! the weather is great and the streets are pretty clear.
using the 1st gen transmission gets me on the road soon.
i swapped the flywheel at work a couple weeks ago. just swappin the other parts at home now (oil pan, pick up tube, front cover etc.)
hoping to have her on the road again, in the next couple weeks.

i'll only go through 1 with the t2 engine before i start using the t2 transmission. i just wanna see how long it'll last.
it's the original stock gsl unit with over 300,000km on it.
however, it's also an extremely tight transmission.
she ain't got no sloppy box and i flushed her fluid often.
hopefully she can handle me ridin er hard till winter.

I blew a TII transmission on mine so I would not recommend it if running anything other than stock turbos. Once you start playing with bigger turbos, it is toast.
