T-5 Transmiison Questions

I got a sweet deal on a t-5 transmission and was wondering if anyone has used it.. ive tried to search but didnt get anything.. i just need to know what i need.. so far this is all i can think of its going on an '82 S

1. Bellhousing adapter
2. Custom driveshaft
3. 8.5"(215mm) Ford clutch dish (i think its a 10 spline) with rx7 pressure plate
4. Transmission mount. is teh one from grannys speed good enough if im keeping the rotary? i dont know if it would slide the transmission forward more then with a v8 conversion

any thing else you can think of that i would need?

First you need to make sure the pilot shaft is the exact same size and will fit in the pilot bearing deep enough. Contact Granny's for complete details.

Keep us updated on how it goes. Wouldn't be a bad idea for me to eventually go with a T-5 trans.

ask rob at rotaryshack.com he sells a bell housing adapter, so he must be able to help you out. good thing me and my buddy are building a 2.3 turbo capri we have a bunch of t5 that we got off of people for free. so when i go turbo and cant make my 12a tranny hold up ill go this way.

While it is nice to have a strong tranny option, I used to own a Capri GT, and the T5 shift feel is like a truck. huge throws, tons of play... One of my favorite things about rx7s, is the shifter feel. Every generation has had good, tight shifts. Although Im sure there are things you can do to make the T5 feel better.

the main reason i want to go this route is i plan on decent HP in the next year or so and the deal i got on a T-5 is way too sweet to pass up. Its very hard to find a (t2 trans that isnt so far away itll cost an arm and a leg to ship), going with a 8.8 rear so on and so forth..

B&M shifter. Friend had a t5 behind his 2.3T...felt absolutely great. Adjustable, short, sweet throws and very smooth. Definitely recommended if you do end up going T5.

TheDriver-have you gotten on OhioRotaries? Someone might have a parts pile that could contain a TurboII tranny. A lot of the members seem to be located in Parma, Mentor, Cleveland, etc, etc.

Ive built a few T-5's and yea, they are great for their simplicity, broad range of parts/interchangability and options.I built a hybrid Chevy/Jeep T-5 for my Samurai and its worked great for years, but its hardly stressed behind my little V-6.

They arent the strongest boxes in the world.Even the ones behind the 4-valve Cobra engine are barely rated to handle the torque that engine makes stock from the factory.A non turbo rotary wont make much torque, but if you go turbo there might be some issues.I certainly wouldnt bother with a Non-World Class box.Youll want the superior taper bearings and syncros of the later World Class units.

Really, for simplicity Id just get a TII tranny. They are super strong.....a varient of that box was used behind full-size F-150 trucks. They are proven at the track, even 3rd gen guys choose them over the FD tranny. And they are nearly a direct bolt up to any 75-95 rotary engine. Why bother with adaptors and input shafts and all that other crap when there is a proven, easy solution?
Unless you have lots of spare T-5's to tear apart and plenty of time/ingenuity.

As many of you will recall...Rene (61620B) in his first few vids with the red 616 20B, he mentioned blowing T-5's without a problem. The FD trans he was running could hold the power.

I wouldn't bother using an inferior product...keep it Mazda!

Yea......20B = torque, and torque = blown T5.

An N/A probably wouldnt break a T5 easily, but I wonder about T5 gear ratios being ideal for a rotary. Most T5's are behind torquier engines like large 4 bangers and 6 cylinders,so the ratios tend to be spread out a bit.
