Anyone have any experience with SuperTrapp mufflers?

They're kind of interesting sounding, so I was wondering if anyone on the forum has used one?

 

A friend of mine has one on his Harley & he says its great. Adjustable to the situation, racing vs cruising the beach. I guess it would be similar. The engines are about the same size.

 

I have one on the racecar. 3" inlet, 5" discs. Exhaust system is straight pipes besides that. I put 7 discs on there to quiet it down when putting the racecar on the trailer in front of the house. It's still a hair loud with only 7 discs but no one's complained yet.

Rotaries really need low restriction exhaust to perform well. They also make a lot of noise. So it's always a compromise.

I think you could use supertrapp on a street driven rotary of you use two of them. And you'd need to have good presilencers in front of them to do the majority of the quieting. If you take away supertrapp discs to quiet it down, you're also restricting the pipe. But again, I think with good RB dual presilencers and running two supertrapps you'd have a real nice exhaust system.

screw that !!!!!!!!!!run dual straight thru pipes because noise=hp, but be sure to use 3" ID, not OD, pipe or better for each pipe or it'll deafen you.

With straight pipes and no discs on the supertrapp the exhaust system is wide open. I'm pushing 103 decibles. Barely noise legal on a racetrack!

Street noise db limit is typically 82db give or take but here in CA the cop can write you up for "modified exhaust" if anything at all is changed on that exhaust system.

talking to a guy running one on his fc racecar, he said that it was ok but probably not near as good as an apexi, etc. he also suspects the glass packing is melting and being blown out. i too was interested in getting one. flat black.

 

The site talks about re-packing the mufflers... if and when the fibreglass breaks down, I could probably re-pack it with steel wool, no?

 

yeah, but it won't have as much sound deadening effect, and probadly wont last all that long.

 

that sucks for you...but ... in Kansas, there is little to no "noise limitation" enforcement unless you buzz a po po or do something like taking the last doughnut @ the doughnut shop

 

My friend has run a Supertrapp tip on his Auto-X RX3 for many years. He likes it a lot. They do look quirky, though.
I have to admit, I get a kick out of guys that will recommend a particular exhaust setup without even knowing what modifications have been done to the engine, if any. But hey, EVERYONE is an "expert" on the internet, aren't they? *chuckle*

 

For the money I think it might be worth it...
I have to put all my expensive projects on hold, since I now have a baby on the way, so I'm looking at other upgrades I can work on that are a bit more budget-minded...

 

i thought steel wool would last longer.

 

It won't burn-up/melt/desintigrate like fibreglass, so I'd think the same thing...

 

My supertrapp with the 'new supertrapp high temp packing' that was new about 2 years ago has held up to sustained 7000+ rpms in desert heat.

And steel wool does very well with rotary exhaust. It can be repacked for cheap when needed.

We've got one on my room mate's fb.... stock manifold, high flow cat, and supertrapp muffler.... LOUD.... much louder than my mindtrain setup.....

RB Road Race (uncollected) header with duel pre-silencers going to dual SuperTrapps...

i had a supertrap on my streetport, with all the disks on, it still lost top end power compared to running it open, super loud!!! after i got about 10 tickets, i took it off, switched to a borla (much quieter)the supertrap mufflerworks good for track racing, you can tune the muffler for more low end engine torque (comming out of a turn), wich you cant with most mufflers!

 

Of course! Less restriction = more power.

Takes many more than the 12 discs the supertrapp comes with to compare with no muffler!

I do think RB dual road race presilencers collected while going up and over the axel then split back into two pipes and into dual supertrapps would:

1. Give the benefits of exaust scavenging by collecting the two pipes together and letting the exhaust pulse of one rotor pull the exhaust out of the other rotor's pipe.

2. Whenever exhaust pipe bends or collects it quiets it down.

3. Allow dual supertrapps to double the quieting yet still allow enought total discs on the supertrapps to give great flow.

I HAVE seen dual superbrappppps on a 1st gen back in 1988, and it wasn't loud but was quite nice sounding. Unfortunately I never got a look at the rest of the exhaust.

jeremy, if you are going to use steel wool, yo will want to use "stainless" steel wool. It is a lot more expensine, but will not break down like regular steel wool.

 

yeah, i know. but he was compare the steel wool to fiberglass. personally, i use titanium wool for the bling, um, lightness factor.
