Supercharger

Has anyone done a setup with a vortex centrifugal supercharger on a 12a? I know it would take some custom work. If it was set up like this picture I dont see how it wouldn't work in a rx7.

The problem with a super charger is the load that is placed on the front bearing on the engine. Super chargers require a lot of belt tension/load, which is then translated into the crank, or E-shaft in our case, and the rotary already suffers from having a weak front bearing to support things such as too tight of an alternator belt, as an example.

I know that Atikins used to offer super charger kits, and I've met someone local that had a home-built super charger kit, but overall, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze. Putting aside the mechanical downside to supercharger mounting, the rotary engine has SO MUCH exhaust energy to harness that the only real power adder that makes sense is turbocharging.

I saw a thread here many years ago that featured a super charged rotary. The work for someone that didn't know much was extensive, especially the ducting. Going with the squeeze isn't worth the juice, $ spent per HP compared to a turbo is higher than a turbo..

I wouldn't say to not do it, just be aware of the drawbacksl

If you increase the flow via the intake and the exhaust you can achieve significant gains without a turbo or supercharger. For instance, a down draft weber and a RacingBeat streetport exhaust setup will easily max the horsepower a stock port 12A can produce (~160HP at the crank). Also a better ignition setup helps a lot as well. Either turbo or supercharger will require significant mods to do correctly and make it drivable.

I am sure you could hook a Rotrex blower to where the air pump or PS/AC goes, I like them better than the Vortex options.

That probably would be better with a rotrex and thats kinda how I envisioned it. The vortex is just what came up when searching for superchargers for carbs. My goal for this car isn't big hp I've always wanted to build a show car weekend driver. Also ive never had a supercharged car before I've had multiple turbo twin turbo or bi turbo.
