Suggestions??

I pulled the 12A with a 3speed auto tranny out of my stock 1982 GSL seven with the intentions of replacing it with a turbo motor. Seeing as how I am seventeen and cant make up my mind, I need some direction. After doing an abundant amount of research, a turbo swap is not cheap. I dont have alot of money. So I am considering throwing the 12a back in. I know it runs but, I want it to be quick....ish. 14.5 1/4 at best 16 at least. I ran a 17.2 at the track when it was stock. I realize I am going to need to buy a 5 speed for it. $150 on ebay. Also an Intake manifold with a carb. What kit is the best bang for the buck? Racing Beat is way too expensive for me. Maybe used?? The motor has over 100k miles on it but has never been abused in its life....until i got a hold of it I also know that rebuilding it is not cheap either. Is porting and rebuilding necessary for the results I am looking for? Thanks for the support guys!

yeah, look on the F/S section of the forum for the tranny, i used to have one, i don't anymore or else i would sell it to you lol. i think (not sure never actually took my car to the track) but you should be able to knock a second or 2 off your stock time, by just re-doing the exhaust, headers are a must, take your rats nest off, and if you have enough money go with the sterling carb, or just do mechanical secondaries, i think that should get you off pretty good. i'm guessing high 15- mid 16's......also take out any weight off that you don't need, spare tire, A/C lol...that would probably be the cheapest way.

Hey bro, I'm 17 too. Do the exhaust. I ran a 17.7 stock (there was some issues with the car) but after a simple tune up (new plug wires, carb clean, new air filter) plus taking out the cats and putting in a cat delete pipe, I pulled a 16.7. Now I just got RB headers and an RB holley kit. I should be putting down a 15 next spring. I got the RB holley kit and the headers for under $500. I plan on doing a RB muffler but thats about it for performance mods until I get to bring her to the track.

Swap the transmission and drveshaft.

Get a Weber carb and intake.

Racingbeat header and custom exhaust.

Remove all the unnecessary crap in the interior.

Get 205-60-13 tires.

Lose 1.5-2 seconds.

Download this book:

http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/manuals/ho...20your%20rx-7/

Broken in to handy sections.

Read it all. It's not specific to drag racing, but it's probably the best single intro into how to improve performance you'll find in the same amount of reading.

And you can't beat the price.

Yeah, carb w/ intake, exhaust, direct fire, and a good tire should get you somewhere in the low 15's to high 14's depending how good a driver you are and the weight is right. I ran 16.09 in my SA with just exhaust and direct fire with shitty all season stock tires and the stock Nikki running richer than Bill Gates

All of the comments others have made are good and I would go with any 2 or 3 of them. You do need to figure out if you are going to eventually rebuild a 12a and port it before you do the carb because some setups are different depending on porting, otherwise all of the things posted will work no matter if it is this engine or another 12a. Last piece of advice don't go too crazy becoming quick you already said you didn't have alot of money you need to start putting a little aside so when the motor does go bad you can replace it.

Here is my advice to you:

Stick everything back in, including the automatic tranny.
-I know, I know, I'm a purist and I HATE automatics, however, hear me out.

You said you don't have alot of money. And you want to go drag racing. Driveline shock is one of those things that you can't get around with a manual transmission while drag racing. If you want to see what happens to a drum brake rear end from a 5500 rpm clutch drop, click on my name, look at my profile, and search for all threads started by me. There is a video of the aftermath of under 10 launches.

Drive the car, learn the car, work on getting it so you are overpowering the tires, then get stickier tires. It seems like you had a knee jerk reaction to fixing your ET's by yanking the motor and tranny out in favor of a turbo mill without looking at the full cost of doing the swap. Get your ET's down this next six months with what you already have, and save your *** off for all the parts you need, drop the money, build the car, and go from there. Good luck.
