Stupid Voltage Regulator!!!

Hey, got a question... well a few... and I have a 79SA(YEAH!!! )

How important is the voltage regulator? would it cause a car not to run? and how can you check it? I looked it over and that black stuff had some bubbles and stuff in it... Guess that would be a dead giveaway... just wana be sure before i throw money at it...

I have just purchased an S5 Alt and am planning to put it in, but not too clear on how to do it...(i saw the 2nd gen upgrade post from the 1stgen FAQs, but mostly spoke of GSLSEs and didnt go into too much detail on how to remove the external regulator...) what it seem is that a ground goes to the bolted post, and rewire the connector to the s5 connector and some how remove the voltage regulator... can some one clear(dummy-fy) the procdure for me?(and yes i did search, nothing) Just dont wana screw up my car...

Also on another topic... I looked at my OMP lines and one was empty, and the other had some still in it... are they suposed to stay full all the time? these are brand new Atkins OMP lines... and didnt look to be leaky... is it somthing i should worry about?

Thanks,
Tim

you remove the Regulator. and have to jump a line. There are instructions in one of the Alt threads.
