stuck starter

83 gsl. i think its my IGN. my starter engages than when i turn it back to just ON.. it still sends signal and is cranking... sometimes even when the car is running the starter is still going.. i have to fiddle with the IGN and than only sometimes it will turn off.

theres three wires going to the starter.

1. power
2. ? black wire
3. ? wire with white clip.

what wire makes the complete circuit? a negitive wire (-) that turns it on and off correct?

I can't remember the starter set-up off the top of my head, what do you mean wire with a clip?

Most likely the Black is your ground, and yes ussually there is a switch that grounds the solenoid to engage the high voltage switch and start the starter...

Sounds like it could be in the Ignition..

Positive battery cable goes to the left main lug on the starter. Smaller black wire comes from the ignition. Sounds like either the solenoid is sticking or your ignition switch is going bad. Start with the starter. There is no white wire.

power wire.
black wire with yellow strip goes from IGN to starter
than theres a small black wire with a clip. and the clip is white.

theres a ground up top of the IGN a black wire it was loose i tightened it and now it seems to work. i tested it with a multi meter and it seemed to open and close (the loop that is)

I assume from your post all is well now? If you haven't downloaded the FSM and wiring manual for your year, now would be a good time, fwiw.

3. ? wire with white clip........is a fuse link wire that goes to the hot start.

I disconnected mine because I know to depress the gas pedal to the floor when I have trouble starting a hot engine.

Overall, it sounds like you have a sticking ignition switch.

I think "white clip" means the white nylon connector on the one starter lead.
