strange vibration sound

'85 GSL-SE, when I floor it in 5th gear at about 40mph as the engine spins up (slowly obviously) at about 45mph something starts vibrating in the back of the car for a second or two, anybody possibly know what this could be? I'm pretty sure it's not the jackstand or handle.

Is it definitely on the inside of the car?
I'd check your wheel balance if you're not sure...

You're in 5th gear at 40??
I don't even shift into 5th until 60 :-P

I don't go that fast or I see blinking lights behind me

Plus my car is extremely unhappy above 75... Oddly enough I think it's a drivetrain thing :-/ Perhaps that's why I have funny noises in fifth gear...

Barf1, is it a clanging vibration? Or is it a shake-your-***** vibration?

I don't normally shift into 5th gear at 40mph but that's how I can make the vibration noise happen every time. I guess I should have been more clear, I don't actually feel the vibration, I can hear something vibrating in the back of the car, could be coming from the inside. I had the rear interior plastic and the right taillight assembly pulled out to do an antenna swap last weekend and looked around then but couldn't find anything loose. I've had the noise for years and can't figure it out.

hmmm... Perhaps does it have something to do with the spare? (or the well in which the spare resides?)

Sounds like a clutch problem.

Could it be the muffler or exhaust moving around?

Mine does the same thing. It is on "the list". I'll let you know what I find, if I ever get a round tuit

Thanks for the ideas, I'm going to check the spare tire and the exhaust system. It could easily be the exahust resonating on something metal underneath the car because of a broken hanger.

I found that the screws holding the hydraulic lifters to the back window were a little loose and would vibrate sometimes. Just remove the lifters and tighten the screws a little. When the glass is up they might seem tight because there is pressure on them (holding up the glass) but when they are down there really isn;t any pressure on them and if they are loose they might vibrate.

Good luck!

my muffler buzzes pretty bad pretty much all the time.

if it's shaking the **** out of your car, i'd probably look at it quick. otherwise, it's probably more of annoyance. a 20 year old car should have a few of those. ;p

well seeing as were on the topic of sounds does anybody else's guages make a rattling sounds when driving, I usually just drown them out with the God awful stock speakers, again, no big deal, I actually think it's pretty funny that they make noise. Actually i'll try and upload a video so you can hear the sounds from the guages and rear end when I get around to it, maybe tonight.

If you have it, try the black box where the rear windshield wiper motor is. Mine is loose, and it rattles when I hit bumps and uneven spots on the road. Of course having the tires pressure at 48 psi doesn't help either lol

something from my dash rattles like a mother. not sure if it's the gauge cluster itself or something behind it. only does it at certain speeds. i blame it on my tires that are a bit out of balance, so when they resonate, everything explodes in an obnoxious cacophony.
