I am currently pondering cutting out the sheet metal that frames the storage bins. I would probably mold some plastic to the rear deck and mount some carpet onto it. Even so I figure it would cut a few pounds over all. It would also give a more open feeling to the car.

Then again I might just be a crazy bastard.

You don't have to cut it. The two panels are just held in by a few screws. At least that's how it is in my 1980 SA.

noob I not so sure if 1980 was the last year you can remove everything completed, I just took out the ones from my son's 84 gsl, to repair the bin rust and everything was screwed in and came out without cutting anything.

Yeah I agree with blueraven. I stripped out an 85 GS and it came right out with a few screws.

I put the battery in the passenger side bin.

It helps the weight balance a ton.

The front left corner is already very heavy without the battery. Moving it back there helps a lot. The scales now show very close to 50% split side to side and front to back. The real beauty of coil overs and the only real purpose for them is to allow adjusting how the car is balanced.

For those that say who cares about weight balance do some reading about vehicle dynamics and transient response of the car before you say too much.

What was the weight distribution before? A battery weighs what, 20 pounds?

Well not yet. I have a couple of remote terminals that are yet to be mounted under the hood that will allow easier jump starts. Right now I could jump it by hooking the positive right to the starter and the negative to the body.

I don't know the exact numbers off hand but it was getting pretty close to even all around with the adjustment of the front coil overs and adding shims between the rear springs and body.

It is probably a bit more than 20 pounds but do you realize how much 20 pounds really is. According to several sources that is a very noticeable amount of weight in a race car. In fact I think it was Jim Susko that mentions this.

being twenty-one years of age negates the neccessity to hide any of that stuff. Besides who the hell buys and carries around porno in their car anyway. That's what broadband and usenet are for.

I plan on relocating my batter to the rear of the car, passenger side, but that doesn't mean i still want the bin there. As rburnett said "Definately need to move the battery to the back, either in the bin or not."

As my username implies I autocross the car. To be within the rules of the class (C street prepared) I need to maintain the interior of the car. Well technically I guess becuase I cut out the interior of the bin I am not totally leagal but without the bin at all it would be much more obvious. I doubt anyone will complain about it though.

Yeah, I realize exactly how much 20 pounds is, it's about 0.85% of the total weight of the car. Moving it hardly does anything.

I've heard it's not how much it is, but the location change... You're moving it from Driver's side, above the trim line, in front of the front axle, to passenger side, just in front of the rear axle, below the trim line.

Not that I've moved it yet, but I plan on it.
