Heres a pic of my sub enclosure. The are about 25 pounds each with the subs, so whoever said that all the metal weighs 20 lbs never lifted weights before. I would say that all that metal is 7 lbs max.

Not that I've moved it yet, but I plan on it.
It has to be an appreciable amount of weight in the first place.

Spend some time around a race team. Not even at the highest levels of racing 5 oz is an appreciable amount of weight.

To get that weight lower, closer to the yaw axis and on the "correct" side of the car is priceless.

Spend some time on a set of scales and play with moving that 20 lbs around. You will be amazed at how much of an effect it has. If you haven't done it then you don't know. Granted a few tenths of a percent in cross weights doesn't seem like much to someone who doesn't care.

I totally understand that a racing team is looking for every ounce of dynamic advantage and I totally understand why they would move the battery to the inside of the car.

You said that moving the battery "helps a ton" and makes a big difference in handling. I disagree that anyone would really notice a difference from the seat of his/her pants. It might be a couple of 10ths of a second faster on a twisty road course due to reduced polar moment of inertia. I've driven my car in many different configurations, without spare tire, without rear sound deadening, with a 12a, with a carbed 13b, with a FI 13b, on the road, it's still dynamically the same car.

I autocross. Many times there are only thousandths of a second between the winner and the loser. Each improvement I make worth a tenth is huge.

You are right it isn't something that you really feel when driving. It helps the numbers on the scale and I am a numbers geek. The 'helps a ton' comment was based on more of a mental/numbers comment.
