Stop Lamp Warning Light
Everytime I hit the brake the "stop lamp" warning light comes on. The strange thing about this problem is that the brake lights still come on when I hit the brake pedal. I was expecting to have no brake lights after the warning light came on. What could be causing this problem? Fuses and bulbs all good. Relay problem, maybe?

I've been keeping an eye on the fliud since the brake master cylinder was replaced. Not to mention the car has spent a lot of time at Mazda (fuel sending unit, clutch master, and slave cylinder) and they always do a routine inspection for the car when it's there. The brakes have performed well (no diving at stops or spongy pedal). When I first start driving the car the front brakes usually squeak at first (nice wake call for my neighbors), until I get to the end of my street and then sqeaking stops, always, but maybe the brakes do need to be bled out again. However the "brake" warning light itself has yet to come on, only the the "stop lamp" warning light comes on, everytime I hit the brake pedal.
As far as the eletrical side of things go, there might be a bad ground somewhere. Not to long ago I replaced the tail light assemblies(clear set w/ LED lights), power antenna (stock replacement), and logitech heater control unit. The logitech was the only piece that gave me any problems because of that one wiring harness that hooks up in the small compartment behind the cigarette lighter/cruise control button assembly. I had to hook it up kind of blindy, there might be a loose wire to it grounding out somewhere in the compartment. I have also noticed that both rear marker lights lose power from time to time. Usually all I have to do is tap the which ever light is out and the light(s) will come back on. They both must have loose connections, or bulbs going bad, either or whatever the marker lights' problems are they will have to be fixed.
Thanks for the feedback.

I have owned 3 83rx7's and all 3 had the brake warning light come on i think it's just a defect in the wiring. Cause all 3 of mine did it & a few that i borrowed did the same including my bro's 83. you can check the wires in the back by the taillights or talk to an electrician but i have experienced it in 3 RX7 so i just got use to it

Airflow is my life
Its not the brake fluid level, thats a different light. I have this problem, but its because I have LED brake lights and the resistance change causes the light to come on. I think theres a test for the stop light checker in the FSM.

Mine comes on because I have a bulb out. The brake lights still come on, but not all of them. Took me a while to figure this out because from inside the car they seemed to be working fine. I replaced the bulb a couple of times (it's on the right side) but it burned out again, not sure if it's the used bulbs I used or something is making them burn out. But since I know I've got brake lights I've kind of gotten used to the warning light coming on, I'll get out there and figure it out someday.

You got it.
The "stoplamp" light detects electrical load in the brake lamp cricuit and comes on when a brakelight bulb burns out.You have 4 on the FB,so youll still have plenty of light back there if one burns out.Its just a convenient way to keep up on maintenence and aviod getting pulled over, not a big safety or mechanical failure type system.
The regular "brake" lamp indicates low fluid level and parking brake "on" scenarios.

My car has a simler problem. But one of the break bulbs does not come on when you step on the pedal. at first I thought it was burnt so I checked and it was not. THe strange thing is that if you pull teh ebreake the same light turns on. Is that messed or what? And how do you fix it?

Couple things. I also have LEDs for my tailights. However this stop lamp light has been coming on every time I have hit brakes since before I changed from standard bulbs to LEDs. So I doubt the LEDs are the source of the problem. Also I would like to mention that none of the brake lights are burnt out. Every light that should come on for the brake lights, comes on when the brake pedal is hit. So I will have to check the stop light checker and replace it if necessary.

I ran a test on the stop light checker and it doesn't need to be replaced. The LED lights are the problem because they aren't providing enough resistance. I run LEDs because I have clear tailights. I could run regular red and amber bulbs, but they lose color over time, they're not as bright, and they use more power.
So, for future reference, for anyone considering using clear tailights with LEDs make sure that the LEDs you buy have enough restistance otherwise the "stop lamp" warning light will most likely come on. You could just disconnect the warning light, but why not just get the right LED lights. Also the stop lamp light coming on because of the LEDs has no effect on the electrical system itself, it's just annoying when the light comes on every time the brakes are hit. When I find the right LEDs I will post the brand and where they can be purchased. LEDs also work well and look good with smoked tailights because of their brighter intensity.
