If I understand you correctly (I am a lottle confused some times), to remove the drive shaft, you take put the four bolts at the rear end and slide the drive shaft towards the rear. It doesnt take that lond at all, if that is what I am thinking you are trying to explain. (I have never pulled a trannie before, so I could be misunderstanding you.)

Thats all you do. The amazingly tough part is moving the rusty exhaust to remove the tranny.

and then the fun part is the damn heat shields. after that, have something under the rear of the engine to support it when the tranny mount is loosened. yank and watch out the way.

oh yeah, you know to drain it and remove the shifter inside the car first, right?

Two things, before unbolting the driveshaft make a mark on the U-joint flange and the rear axel so that when the driveshaft is re-installed it is returned to it's original location. It may have been re-balanced in the past so positioning may be important to avoid unnecessary vibrations at higer speeds. Second, once unbolted the driveshaft slides towards the tranny then drops out. I'm sure that'll be obvious once you're under there. Good luck.

Ok.. heres my take on removing the tranny. since I've done it about 5 times..

jack up car! PLEASE PUT THE CAR ON 4 JACK STANDS AT THE VERY LEAST! then remove your positive battery cable...ok now that I have done the disclaimer.. let's move on...

remove shifter from inside.. (3) 10mm bolts.. move to clutch slave cylinder (2) 12mm? I think... then removed (4) 12mm? that bolt driveshaft to the rear diff, slide driveshaft out of the way... remove all heatshields that are in your way.. all 10mm, next up is the (2) 14mm bolts that hold the starter in..but before you do you must remove the positive and neg wires going to the starter. Now start taking parts of your exhaust off that are in the way of the tranny coming down... This part varies since I have an RB system...Then start loosening and removing the bolts that mate the tranny to engine. I think there are a total of (5) 14mm bolts excluding the starter's (2)... next get a jack and support the rear of the engine near the oil pan..get your @ss under the car with your head facing the rear and have your knees support the tranny bell housing.. start taking the 2 tranny mount bolts off and slide tranny back....be careful not to have the tranny drop on your stomach or vay down there.. BE CAREFUL PLEASE! tranny is about 90 lbs??? so its not that big of a deal dropping it... the fun part is reinstalling it by yourself.. hehehe if you need tips on reinstalling it by yourself.. just post it up and I'll tell yah how I do it with one hp (human power) haha.. ohh yeah wear some goggles! I always get $hit (NOT literally cr@p) in my eyes while under there and it's not the best feeling in the world..have fun and be careful doing it dude..SAFETY FIRST!

Guys, you don't really need to disconnect the driveshaft. It slides off nicely once you get the tranny low enough to move the tranny forward.

Presuming you have left the driveshaft on, to reinstall, you mate the driveshaft to the tranny, jack the tranny into position, tighten a few bolts, then mate eveything tightly and secure the mount. After that it's more bolts, reattaching slave and boot, and done. No need to overcomplicate things - installation is the reverse of removal.

Buy a haynes manual - it's all I had 9 years ago when I was but a young pup of 20 dropping the tranny to replace the clutch. It was my first major work on the car, and I had literally not even changed my own oil before. If I could do it then with a haynes manual and my dad's tools - you can too!

i've never had to take any of my exhaust off, it never got in the way. the heat sheald sorta does but it's alright..

make sure u hold the base of the tranny upo with a jack!. u dont wana be undoing the bolts and then have the tanny drop.
and if ur doing the clutch make sure to buy a clutch aligning tool! its hard enuf to get the tranny and engine to mate with all the weight of the tranny let alone have to keep bring it up and down to reposition the clutch. (these never happened to me)

and when forcing the drive shaft out of the tranny, have a firm grip on it, u dont want it to slip and fall on ur stomach and wind u (this did )

i think im due for a clutch change kinda soon
