Steering wheel woes...

Well I picked up a steering wheel puller today and I just thought id try it out for giggles (my momo race wheel arrives in like 6 days...) Anyways so I begin tightening the middle bolt and wamm-o! The steering wheel comes off... Then I notice that the puller actually bent the steering wheel where the 2 nuts attach into it... Is it common for that to happen? Im sure it could easily be hammer flat again but it's just kinda lame that it happened... I followed all the instructions on the package, anyways just thought I would share my story... And oh ya theres no way I could ever get that off by tugging and if I did I would knock myself out. So when the momo gets here ill throw it on and pretend like this never happened, damn I hate breaking things that were fine in the first place...

Thanks

We don't need no stinkin pullers. Puller not needed on first gen. Just remove the center nut and wiggle it back and forth and it comes right off. rx7doctor

im sorry but I have to disagree I was reading in another thread about someone trying to muscle to off and breaking the steering shaft itself and having to replace it... I decided I would spend a few dollars and just get a puller rather then risking knocking myself out...

Disagreement noted. However have done more than 50 and have never had a problem. The trick is to wiggle it back and forth and it will come off with no damage.

Gotta side with dan on this one.
Of course, had he known that simply snugging the puller down a bit, and tapping the end of the puller with a small hammer will usually pop the wheel off, it likely wouldn't have bent the wheel. At least he didn't snap the steering shaft, like many others have done.

That's a fact jack. you Gently wiggle it side to side. The reason they bust any of the pieces is because they did not know what they were doing and tried to as you
stated "Muscle it off". rx7doctor

I removed a wheel from an '80 this past weekend. I tried muscling it off, as I'd thought I'd read somewhere that SAs didn't need steering wheel pullers, but that didn't work. So I stared at it for a few minutes, thinking of my options, when I happened to recall a post about wiggling the wheel side-to-side. 3 wiggles later, I had it off.
