that said, there's little reason why the steering boxes should'ne be interchangeable. I was comparing my new one (1985) with Matt's '79 SA one today. While they were different, the mounting bolts were in the same place.

Yeah, but recirculating ball steering boxes aren't the sharpest things to begin with, adding age to the equation just means a higher possibility of your steering becoming sloppy and loose sooner.
But for $850CDN, I'd see if I could pick up a used box and get it rebuilt somewhere. I don't know exactly where, but there's gotta be a place somewhere that rebuilds them.
Personally, I'm waiting for another option... Perhaps at some point in the near future we'll get R&P thanks to some aftermarket support... but we'll have to wait and see.
Mazdatrix does have them for $450USD. I've had awesome customer service through them, so if you're set on buying one, I'd start here:
http://www.mazdatrix.com/hsteer1.htm
It works out to like $550CDN + shipping, and if you ask them they just might be nice and ship it via something other than UPS (because UPS will totally rape you with "brokerage fees")

Mazdatrix shipped mine US airmail. However, he took the packing box that it was in when he bought it off his local dealership and repacked it in a box substantially longer and thicker (with little padding, so I don't see the point) so shipping and duties were astronomical. By the time I had it in my posession, I'd paid about $800 CDN.
Then when I tried to order a couple of hundred bucks more worth of stuff, he turned into a dick and ranted about how stupid his customers are - and didn't fill the order.
Just buy the $850 one. For the extra $50, you're saving yourself a lot of hassle. Yes, it seems expensive but my stock steering lasted 22 years... I figure a one-time pop to make the steering tight and true again for another couple of decades is reasonable.
Do you own an oxyacetylene torch? my pitman arm was rusted on, and I had to heat it and use the two-hammer method to persuade it to come off. This was easier to do off the car than on, though removing the box with the arm still attached was like a nightmarish maze. I've no PS and the air conditioning had long since been removed, and my battery is relocated to the right side passenger bin. Even so, with a relatively straight shot, it's a two man job to R&I the box and column.

That's so odd...
My experiences with Mazdatrix are the exact opposite. I ordered an RB presilencer. It got all the way to the local postal outlet when I found a full RB Street Port exhaust for sale used here on the forum. I called them, and they said to just refuse the package, and that they'd keep an in-store credit for me for the value of the presilencer.
They had honoured my request for which shipping company to use, so I didn't have to worry about UPS raping me for brokerage, and when it came time to order the next batch of stuff, I just called them, gave them the order over the phone, they confirmed that it would use up my in-store credit and it was shipped promptly.
Now, if you don't communicate with them, like when I ordered my first Mazdatrix order (my fuel level sender), then you'll end up paying UPS' stupid brokerage fees, because that seems to be their preferred shipping company.
Now I actually order RB stuff *through* Mazdatrix because I've gotten better customer service there and the prices are almost always the same.

Another concern in the back of my mind is safety. Just say for instance that some Joe Blow steering shop does the rebuild & God forbid I'm cruising down the highway & BAM something goes wrong. I own a clean GSL SE & I intend to keep the car for a long time that's why I'm contemplating whether or not I should buy it.
Vipernicus42 thanks for letting me know about the Mazdatrix steering boxes.
