State Inspection Problems (emissions)
Help! Took the POS Racer out to try again for a state inspection sticker, and failed miserably.
This is my second attempt. Following is the results of my two tries:
Today 8/18/01
HC PPM : 2050
CO % : 3.32%
O2 % : 3.0%
CO2 % : 10.9%
1st attempt 5/24/01
HC PPM : 788
CO % : 1.59%
O2 % : 16.2%
CO2 % : 9.8%
Texas HC PPM Max is 220PPM & CO2 % is 1.20% Max.
Have worked on getting it to idle, have changed cap, rotor, O2 sensor, belts, oil, and a few other things that I can think of right now. The air pump is in the car and appears to be working correctly.
To me the car seems to be running great, only have the slightest bit of miss just coming off of idle, but otherwise she has smooth consistent power to the buzzer.
Any ideal what could be causing it to run so good but fail emissions so bad?

Well our cars run best when running rich, that seams to be your problem. The two causes I have found is either a bad air filter or the your mix is to rich. Of course you will always want to do an oil change and change the plugs before you get it inspected too.
When I firt got my cart I was running 1600 hc ppm, I changed the air filter and it went down to 5 hc ppm. Another time I was running 1250 hc ppm and I had a K&N so I went and adjusted my mix and watched it go down to around 10 hc ppm.
Good luck.
P.S. run some higher octan fuel threw your car before inspection.

Thanks Pittdp, ran out to Pep Boys and got a new air and fuel filter for the POS Racer! I also wonder if when I adjusted the Variable resistor and the Air adjust screw if I made an error. Based my adjustment off of the world renown "Solving GSL-SE Idle problems".
Does anyone know if you can rent an emission testing device, hate to keep adjusting then run it back and start the entire process over! It would be great if you could monitor the HC while adjusting.

Ya know when I had my 84.... I needed it to pass and it also failed. I just went and got a new air filter, new fuel filter, new plugs, new wires (prob didn't need them but did anyways) and a couple bottles of alcohol and did all that…. Put the bottles in and ran it right there and it passed w/ flying colors… immediately ran it home and drained her and got good gas w/ some additives so she would be alright hehe. Kind of felt bad that I did that too her (wasn’t sure at the time if it would hurt it or not) but she was ok afterwords and I passed... *shrug*
Still thinking it may have had something to do with my adjusting. But still haven’t found a way to monitor the HC while adjusting.
But I’ve go some parts to throw at her tonight.
What kind of alcohol did you use? It also figures I filled the POS racer with gas this morning!

I have been using Blue Sky off and on for about four years. This year I needed the dreaded smog check which I always fail, and get the $500.00 from the state to repair it.
This time I took the advice from your web site and added 4 oz. And drove the car until I was almost empty. Filled the tank up and drove 10 miles and passed the smog check. The measurements were lower then in 2002 after I had new catalytic converters installed, about $700.00.
Thank You
Alfred
P.S. You may use this in you testimonials. Most wankel engines (rotary) don't pass smog the first time
I'm located in CA. Blue Sky might be hard to find. Go to their web site. The above is what I wrote to the Blue Sky. Hope this helps.
