smog techs help PLZ

ok, so took the FB to smog today. And of course it failed It passed everything except the HC's. Since I can only take it to a test only shop. The tech couldnt tell me anything. So this is what the test looked like

HC (PPM) @ 15mph: MAX 152, AVE 45, MEAS 206
@ 25mph: MAX 123, AVE 33, MEAS 130

So what are the possible problems here? anyone? Oh and i am located in sac so if someone knows what it is and how to fix it, maybe you can come take a look at it

well you failed HC's, which is raw unburnt fuel, check your plugs and wires. it helps to have new ones, make sure your cat is in good shape as well, and do you have any exhaust mods? like a header

When you go in to a smog check (which BTW I did last week and passed) you should do a complete maintenance tune-up including oil change, new oil filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, air filter, etc. Some may be omitted such as the air filter, wires, cap, rotor depending how much you drive the car. The HC are high because of unburnt fuel. Your catalytic converter might need to be replaced soon. Make sure your timing is dead on also and all your emission control system such as your Air Control Valve and Air Pump. We need a little more information if you want more help for your situation but these are general things to help rotaries pass smog. Every little thing in working order helps.

There is also a little cheat by using denatured alcohol in the gas tank which adds more oxygen to the combustion making everything burn hotter.

Seems like you are very close to passing smog. Let us know what else you have done to your car before smog and we'll be glad to help. Hope you pass! Its a good feeling driving around legit! Good luck!

the exhaust is 2.5 piping with a magnaflow muffler. besides that its mostly stock (tranny stuff) the carb was rebuilt about a year ago, I just put new plugs (NGK) in 2 days ago along with a oil change. it is a 83 but has a jdm 82 12a with a little over 50k on it
