starts, with some help

I know some of you are going to hate me for posting another no start thread. but I haven't been able to figure out what the holdup is from my searches.

it all started after the rats nest removal/rebuilt carb swap on my 85 12a. on a cold start (first of the day or after it has sat for 6+ hours) it will turn over fine but doesn't fire except for a little cough on the first try only. popping the clutch or the use of starter fluid will get her going but I have to let it idle for a couple minutes or it will stall out. any suggestions? I have already replaced the plugs and swapped in a good battery.

thanks in advance for any help.

Did it run good (or at least "run") before the rats nest removal? If so I'd say you have a vac leak somewhere. Whats the mileage on the motor? Also who rebuilt the carb and are they familiar with Nikis? Is it a Niki? Get back to us.

Do you use the choke at all? Even when the most of the choke parts on the carb are removed, you still hook up the choke cable. The choke will raise the idle for cold starts.

Shawn,
it started up strong on every crank before the carb swap and rats nest removal, it still runs well once it is started now. we did a spray test for vac leaks, nothing showed up. the carb was purchased, rebuilt by the guy who is helping me work on my 7.

trochoid,
I do use the choke to keep it from stalling out right after a cold start, I have to hold it though, it wont stay out.

keep the suggestions rolling, it kills me a little inside every time I have to spray starter fluid in my baby.

Go over the motor with a fine tooth for vac leaks again and if thats not it it may be the carb. Good luck.

If the choke will not stay out when cold, check the thermosensor at the back of the waterpump housing, Either it's not plugged in or the wires are broke.

i dont know whats wrong with yours but i did the RNR and am having the same problem, i have already pulled the entire intake system off and am waiting on an intake gasket before i try again, anyhow, i read some where on this site that someone else had similar symptoms and i ended up being the AP was bad, im not sure how the AP effects startup but it may be something for you to look at.

Moral of the story. Leave the rats nest alone if you are still running the stock carb. Everytime this happens it screws up the running of the vehicle. Rats nest removal = simplicity. Yeah, right.
