starting issue!!
I have an '85 GSL Manual
I just experienced this starting problem yesterday and has been a reliable problem since then.
Turn the key, all normal electronics come on except the starter motor does absolutley nothing!! That's right no clicking, no cranking... NOTHING! I turn the key off and try again, same thing. I repeat the process a few times, and then seemingly randomly it WILL start.
My dad said that this was a known common problem notorious on series one RX-7's (he has much experience with them). He said it was probably the starter switch.
Anyone else have similar experiences that could maybe help me out a little bit more? Any suggestions will be appreciated

I don't think it is a problem with the actual motor itself because If I try at it long enough, I can get it to crank over. And when it does crank over it performs normally.

well your dad was absolutely right, I did a big write up on this before "man I wish people would search"
never the less, its not in the switch, you can swap out the whole iginition if you like "I did" the problem is in the starter and if you dont change it then soon it wont start at all, put a new stater in and put new connectors on all the wires down there, this is still yet a temporary fix as in a year or less it will most likely do it again,
usally when this happens it really all traces back to the vehicles wiring which is not worth getting into.
good luck

The starter switch is a definite possibility. I once had a similar problem with my SE. The wire that goes to the starter was highly corroded and was to the point that is was falling off. I had to use a jumper wire until I could get an other switch. Also, check the connection at the starter and the battery cables too if it turns out not to be the switch. You should be able to find a switch at a wrecking yard for pretty cheap.
Good Luck.

I have the same problem currently on my '85. However sometimes it doesn't start to turn over at all and what I need to do kneel down on the ground with the driver door open. With a tire iron in my left hand I reach under the car and tap the starter while my right hand is turning the key, and then it starts once i tap the starter and turn the key at the same time. You gotta have some reach though and a good "L" shapped tire iron. Guess I should get a new starter but it's too cold for that now.
