starter and tranny wiring

Ok well i'm finishing up the wiring on my project, and while i've finished the 89+ wiring... i forgot some of the positions of the FB wiring.

I wasnt the one to take my starter out, so I dont know which cable went where.... Was the negative on the left or right? Also what does the connector that goes on the selinoid look like?

Again, I went from an automatic to a manual transmission, so I'm trying to figure out the 5th switch and reverse light. The 5th switch was just a connector with a circle and a rubber protector over it right? It fits on the 5th switch, so I hope its right...

Now the reverse light has got me confused as all hell.... there are 2 wires that can attach to the back up tlight wire on the left side of the tranny. What color is the correct wire?

While I'm on the subject, is redline gear oil worth the money? I'm going to have to pick up some gear oil tomorrow and I dont know if redline is worth the $$ it costs.

I was told the redline is some of the best stuff out there and worth the money. Some people think so, others dont. Personally, Im going to try it. Some people use other synthetics in their trannies with good results also. As far as the tranny wires go, I just guessed and happened to get it right, and I dont remember the starter wires, sorry .

well its mainly the seleniod connector on the starter i'm worried about.... i cant find a connector in that area that fits!

I also know this is a connector that causes alot of problems when it gets dirty. Might anyone have a diagram of it or a pic?

Ok I know I have a problem now, I looked at the wiring today, and I found the connector that connects to my starter selinoid.

Heres the problem, the plug comes from a wire attached to the shifter on my old automatic transmission!!!

I can't find the plug any where else on the wiring, so there has got to be a plug for the manual trans models, and the wiring harnesses are the same on both, so where is it?

Ok, Im betting that the wire coming from the old auto tranny is for a park safty switch of some sorts so you cant start the car unless its in a specific gear.

So, you need to find the wire that is on the cars harness that goes to the solenoid.

There are only two wires that hook to the starter on a manual tranny car. One is the positive battery cable, and the other is a small single spade connector that is in between the two large posts. The ground cable can just go under one of the starter bolts, and the grouding strap or whatever it is, you dont need to worry about. It should have come with it on the right post. So, with that new information in mind, I THINK that the positive cable goes on the opposite terminal from the grounding strap, but dont quote me.

Does that help at all?

Ok, well just for you I ran out and took a (crappy) picture of my starter. As I said, two wires on the starter itself. The positive battery cable (with the rubber boot), and the solenoid switch wire (small wire in between and above thettwo larger posts). Then, theres the grouding strap that hooks to the other post, grounds to the body of the starter, which grounds to the engine block, which is where your groud wire should be attached . Hope THIS helps .

yeah its the connector for the terminal inbetween the posts i cant find, i mean i see it on the starter, but I cant find the connector anywhere...

yeah the auto cars wouldnt start unless it was in park, so that makes sence. Ok so I the positive battery cable goes on the right post and the negative one just goes on a starter bolt?

Yeah, sounds good to me. Thats the way mine is anyway, and it works great. The small wire that hooks onto the solenoid comes out of the same harness as the reverse lights I believe...

Woah, wait a minute...

You said "the right post"... This is a matter of perspective. The picture I took is from the rear of the car facing the front, looking at the back of the starter. Just put the wires like mine, and it should work, I think.

In my opinion, from the way that picture is taken, the grounding strap is on the right post, with the positive on the left. Whatever you do, just dont hook the positive wire to the same post as the grouding strap .

Dude, the cable on the second post is not a 'grounding strap'. When you turn the key and the contacts inside the solenoid close, current flows from the positive battery cable, through the contacts and out through this strap to the starter motor.

DEFINATELY!! Redline is very good! I noticed a considerable difference in the "smoothness" of the shifts once the fluid warms up. I also switched to Royal Purple by recommendation of another fellow Rotorhead and he swears that you will feel even more with royal purple.... I bought 2 quarts and filled mine up last sept.. but my synchros are so F'in bad right now, I think I wasted $16 bucks by putting it into a bad tranny. I'd recommend the upgrade!
