Starter ground question

I'm putting my starter back on, and I can't figure out where the ground cable was bolted before. I have the positive cable bolted to the solenoid of course, but there are no bolts near the negative cable. The only place I can think of where it would go would be between the actual starter motor and the bellhousing on the longer bolt...but it seems like it would make the starter sit off center and work correctly.

The cable normally goes on the long bolt, before it goes thru the engine. You don't want the cable between the engine and starter.
The cable can attach to any bellhousing bolt, but the factory location was the long starter bolt.

Ok. Where then does the bracket holding both the + and - cable attach to? I had the bracket mounted on that bolt.

I suggest that you take out the starter , clamp a jumper cable from the battery negative post to the starter body.

Clamp the other jumper lead to the to positive battery post and >>>touch<<< it to the solenoid.

The solenoid contact that does NOT activate the solenoid is the one you want to attach the car's positive cable too. Logic is that if you attach it to the solenoid contact that activates the solenoid, the solenoid will always be activated.

Oh, ans please have the car >>>out of gear<<< and the battery disconnected when you are under the car installing the starter

On my SA, the bracket goes to the front end of the upper bolt; the cable grounds to the back end of the long TRANS bolt, not the starter bolt.

Like so:

Been that way since I got it.

No problem; I'm still futzing with getting my exhaust together, so I just happened to be under there tonight.

I didn't have access to a computer, and my Haynes manual didn't mention it specifically. I tried a search and I could find any useful information, so I made a thread. My apologizes...
