Angry Annoying starting and driving probs

Rebuilt 12a with about 1200kms has been running beautifully for this whole time until recently it started to act up as the mornings get colder..

The engine is rebuilt completely, exc cond rotors and housings, all new seals.. I just slapped on the old stock untouched nikki because it worked just fine before and still did.... until now.

Heres what happens... In the mornings I used to give 5 pumps, pull out the choke halfway and it would start right up. Now no matter what I do, it turns dead-like.. occasionally i get a little blip.. rRrRrRRRrr but nothing, its not even that cold!
I get out.. spray some starting fluid down the primary barrels and she starts right up, and I have to stay on the gas to keep it going till I pull the choke.

Once its warmed up, it drives pretty normal except when I suddenly floor the gas, now it hesitates like its about to stall, and THEN revs.. during acceleration at WOT as I shift gears and release the clutch it jerks and then keeps going, never used to do this
If i shut it down after warm-up, it starts up like normal no pumps or choke.

Frustrating as that sounds, I lived with it for the past week.. and NOW same thing..but this time I cant keep it running. once the starting fluid burns away it just dies on me, tried 4 times this morning and eventually gave up. It sounds like a fuel problem to me. hopefully a fuel filter, but im not sure.

Sorry for the novel length, but I wanted to get as much info in here to solve my problem as possible

In the fuse box under the dash, check the fuse labelled "engine". If that is blown, then no fuel pump.

Check to make sure that you have spark on the trailing plugs too, because some models will not run the fuel pump unless it receives indication of spark on trailing after the engine starts up.

As far as the hard starts and such, check for vacuum leaks or there might be a blockage in the carb. Also take a look at all tune-up items that haven't been addressed recently (plugs, cap/rotor, timing, fuel filter, etc).

Good luck...

Oh i forgot to add, I have an aftermarket fuel pump (loud) and a regulator at 2.5 psi, so I know the pump is working for sure,
carb float bowl level normal too.

I had changed the fuel filter when I got the new fuel pump, (only 1200kms ago)
Plugs are fairly new, under 5000km, cap and rotor are 1200kms ago

I'm just hoping a rust flake or something clogged up the filter and its that simple

I just got it started with like a million pumps of the gas...
Fuel pressure is 2.5 still

Think a fuel filter could cause this?

If you check the fuel filter and its okay, you might want to think about the carb. Its stock so it might be time for adjusments or a rebuild (jets n things like that). Just an idea.

A bad filter would more likely be noticed during hard driving, rather than starting. Since the fuel bowls are full, and you're still having issues starting her, then I would suspect the carb or ingition.

I'm not good with carbs but it sounds like the accelerator pump in the carb isn't working anymore. look into the throat of the carb and open the throttle if you don't see any gas get squirted in then the pump needs to be fixed.

If you still have air pump and AAB valve be sure to check the AAB hose.

No air pump or any emissions of the sort..

Today after a complete warm up, idles fine at 800rpm
Like I said it hesitates and almost stalls when I floor the gas while idling... this time I did it by hand at the carb.. and there is PLENTY of fuel getting pumped in there.. enough that it spits back occasionally and hits me in the face. I don't know how this happened, its very odd

I'm going through the same issues currently, and it sounds like I have the exact same car as you, new motor, emissions removed, all tuneup stuff done, new carb, etc

I wasn't getting spark on the trailing coil, it took me way too long to figure that out too. Replaced the plugs, fuel filter 3 times, wires, when I could have just checked the spark to begin with.

But now its doing it to me again after about 500miles with no problems after replacing the coil, so I need to take a look at it again tonight
