Start Up Procedure

I just got my 7 a while ago and I'm wondering if theres a special start up procedure to let it warm up. How long should I let it idle before I take off? Should I let it warm up to regular temp before I really rev the engine? I've read what shouldnt be done but I couldn't find any info on how to treat the car right. Thanks for the help

I have been wondering this too. I turn on my car without choke, keep the engine rpms at 1-2k constantly then left off after about 1 minute and let it idle by itself it drops to like 350pm then jumps to life back up to 750rpms. Then I take off and dont rev it high until engine temperature needle reaches about 1/4 out . hope this helps

I sometimes think I am starting a jet when I start my car. My girlfriend laughs at me....

Heh.

Anyways, when I get in my car, I shake the shifter to make sure the car is in neutral. Then, I turn the key to the "On" position, pull the choke out, and stab the gas for a second. Finally, I turn the key, and she fires right up. On choke, she idles about 2000rpm (depending on ambient air temp), and when she is off of choke, she idles at about 1500rpm.

Purrs like a kitten. Or atleast, she did, until she lost a coolant seal after 120,000 miles.

I can't wait to rebuild and get her back on the road...

30 sec will get the oil pressure up to drive; take it easy until the choke shuts off, which is usually about a mile of driving in my RX - then off you go!

on my carb'd rx, i'd do the following:

key to on to turn on the fuel pump
stab the loud pedal a couple of times
wedge a nickel under the choke to keep it out (it was broken on my car)
start it up
run it for about 2 minutes for the engine metal to warm
turn it off, let the heat off the engine rise and thaw out the carb
turn it back on

purred like a kitten after that.

my carb wouldn't work right until it was nice and warm. the airflow from the fan slowed the carb's heating process by a lot, so i just turned it off to give it a little help. if i didn't warm the carb, the car would stall out every time i took it out of gear.

I learned a way that worked good for me, but i learned it a little late.

The way my car started right was:

1) In Neutral, foot on clutch....
2)key to on
3)pump gas pedal about 7 times
4)Start engine
5) Pull choke, when the engine starts
6) adjust choke to keep it at 2000 rpm for a minute
7) Push the choke in, in increments until it's at 1000 or 1500rpm
8)the car should have warmed up for at least 5 minutes before you take off

Hope this helps!

thanks for the tips. The car idles well but my temp and oil pressure gauges aren't working correctly so until I fix those its good to know approximately how long to let it idle before I drive off.
