Unhappy Start Assist

can anyone out there provide some relief.....quick brief; i engage the choke and the engine starts with no problem but once she warms up or i disengage the choke it's all over, she shuts down and the only way it starts again is with the choke.....it sounds like it's gasping for something; possibly fuel, the only thing i could think off is that there's not enough fuel going to the carb, but i'm not sure what could be blocking any fuel from getting there, i've checked all possible without rebuilding the carb....she was running a bit rough before the tune up but running none the less. i changed the oil, plugs, filter, coolant, cap, rotor, cables, thermostat, and a few gaskets, it was also sitting for about 3 mos. thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

When doing the tune-up did you do anything that might have caused a vacuum leak? I had a leak, and my car would run fine with the choke ingaged, but once it kicked out, it wouldn't idle. Does it die even if you have your foot on the accelerator, or just when it is at idle?

thanks for the prompt response yark, yes i did, i replaced all the cracked hoses and cleaned the engine.....she does not idle, she'll stay running w/my foot on the pedal but only if i keep it at 3k rpm....btw, i forgot to mention it's an 84 gsl.

Have you ever taken the carb off? Possibly the phenolic spacer (goes between carb and intake manifold) is upside down. Wish I would have figured that one out before I started ripping parts off my spare car.....

Yeah, like ianS asked has the carb been off the car? I had a 7 that wouldnt idle at all after a carb rebuild and discovered that the previous owner had the carb gasket upside down so the small holes were all blocked and it wouldnt run w/o a foot hard on the gas.

Sounds like a vacuum leak, or no fuel to the idle circut. Bring up the idle speed till itll stay running on its own, then start looking for leaks.

got your PM..

if it does start up, then would just abuptly die, it is most likely and if not a guaranteed vacuum leak. my old rx2 carb'd 4 port 13b FB never had this problem since i always checked for any loose vacuum hoses. however, i did have this problem on my dad's carburated sentra. it start up right off the bat, wouldn't hold a constant idle. when i did inspect it further, it proved to be loose vacuum hose out of place. i even thought it needed a carb rebuild so i bought one, but it wasn't even the case in the first place (so i just wasted some money there)! so now w/ the vacuum leak solved, the carb'd sentra has no problems whatsoever holding its idling.

hope that helps.

and like what carl said, you might also want to try upping your idling to 1500-2000 rpm's so you can hear any 'hissess'
