Squealing!
Squealing!
My belt is squealing after about 4k rpm. It is brand new and of quality. However the air pump was recently removed which might be the cause for it. Any remedies for this, other than putting the air pump back on?

Don't bother with the dual pulley setup, just get the fabled 'Yoohoo' belt. Go to NAPA and ask for a 3L220 belt, it's a short little guy and will fit perfect going from your main pulley to the water pump.
I've had mine on for several thousand miles with NO squealing whatsoever.

Gents,
I have had the same problem!!
The Racing Beat double pulley does a good job of reducing the problem.
I believe the stock fan is also a part of the problem. If the stock fan is not functioning as it should, that is, not running when not needed, then you are loading the belt/belts all the time thus wearing them out as there is not enough belt contact with the water pump/fan pulley system when the air pump is no longer installed.
Please carry a spare belt and tools to change out as the single belt cannot handle the loads imposed and will shred about once a week depending on how much driving you do. I have been caught more than once looking for both a belt and the tools to fix the problem.
If you observe black residue all over your alternator, fan etc.. it is on the way out. If you do loose the belt, do not operate the engine as there will be no coolant circulation. The temp gauge will show fine, but the engine temp is going through the roof!!
A remedy may be to simply put an idler pulley in place of the air pump. This would provide the needed contact patch for the belt that is driving the water pump.
So far I am finding the double pulley belts are wearing and not evenly, the front one is beginning to fail and I have to watch the tension frequently.
My two cents worth.

Now how could that possibly be, when the temp sensor is in the engine block? if there is no coolant circulation, the temp gauge would max out, wouldn't it?

your temp gauge will rise... i was going down the highway and my belt broke.. all my dash lights came on but the car was still running.. I wasn't far from home so i drove it home and the gauge got up to about 3/4..
Gents,
I have a lot to learn. Thanks for the info on the position of the temp sensor. I thought it was in the radiator also.
Now I have to admit I took a big chance twice with my 12A. I am on the way to work and accross the Ohio river bridge and the belt breaks. Like Unsupa, all the dash lights came on and I had to get to work for a meeting. I went 3 miles to the next exit, stopped for a traffic light, turned off the engine, the light turned green, fired up and got back on the interstate, drove 18 miles at 3600 rpm, 60+ mph, got off the home ramp, made the light, now operating at 30 + mph, 1 mile to go and as I turn into the drive, see the temp begin to rise above 1/2 of gage range. I am thinking probably fried the engine.
The same thing happened again at another point on the same interstate when going toward home, only this time I was near a small town and managed to get to a garage who had a belt I could use temporally. This got me to a parts house. It appears there is no damage to the 12A as it runs great.
After this experience I bought the Racing Beat double pulley and installed the two belts. But that is not a complete cure as I had to tighten the belts just two days ago and am finding the front belt is becoming looser than the rear belt??

The engine won't fry if the temp gauge is briefly past 1/2. When you get to 2/3rds then its risking it, and if it gets to the hot zone damage is almost assured. I drove my car with my earlier engine (granted, eventually an apex seal blew, but lasted me 20,000 miles, 145,000 total) and it often went past 1/2 on the gauge. Of course the ideal is to have it at 1/3 or so, which I achieved after replacing the t-stat and radiator.
Anyways, back on the subject, I can go double pulley (have one readily available) or yoohoo belt. Which way should I go? anybody else has feedback on this? maybe I should make a poll out of this...

sorry, noob here
