Squeak, squeak, squeak

The squeaking is driving me crazy. It's coming from the dash and goes away when the car is stopped. Comes back at about 15 MPH. I suspect either the speedometer or the speedo cable. Can you just disconnect the cable from the tranny, pull out the inner cable and grease it or do you have to disconnect the cable from the speedometer too. If it's the speedometer can it be lubed? Easiest is to disconnect at tranny, slide out cable and lightly lube with machine oil or WD40. When you put it back in spin it slowly with drill to make sure its working the speedo. Do not try to lube or mess with the speedo itself, its a very delicate instrument.

The inner (spinning) cable itself can be pulled out through the sheath (housing) down by the transmission. Just make sure not to drop it in the dirt when you remove it, since that would make the problem exponentially worse
