Sound proofing,road noise,

Today me and my GF were in my 7 on the freeway.and she says
she can't hear the stereo,i look around both windows are up,
the moonroof closed,,it was really noisey inside the car,i guess
i don't notice that,,my car has 82 stock everything,,muffler (s)cats
I've never heard how the car sounds,,when say i let someone use
it to go to the store,,or whatever,,as i watch it drive away from me..to hear it,,,how much outside noise(wind)do you get at 70 mph..tire contact too..are the undersides of 1st gens paper thin ?
i'm not sure whats up,,,buy an amp for the stereo =more power ?

Instead of INCREASING the stereo volume, why not DECRASE the outside noise? Install some dynomat, and get a rubberized undercoating, that'll keep exhaust and road noise down.

yeah, mine's a little loud too. not too bad at 70, but it'll never be mistaken for a caddilac. i usually don't notice it(loud stereo), but the LSD can get a little loud. i HAVE to go with the loud stereo. i don't think dynamat would do much about the noise that darn pacesetter muffler puts out. hey smnc, do you have dynamat? i'm wondering how much it'll quieten up with a good exhaust, dynamat, and rubberized undercoating.

Or is it maybe the ground effects(air dam )that produce more noise...I'm hip about the LSD...how about weather striping,,around the doors ??

No, I don't have Dynomat installed, but I have a buddy with a REALLY loud Civic hatchback that does. His car's exhaust is really loud, and the Dynomat really quieted things down in the cabin.

I plan on installing some in my car this winter when I replace my carpet and upgrade my stereo.

i wanted to dynomat the car too, but I tried so hard to lighten the car. I took out soo much crap. I did put a system in the car which must have wieghed it down large but my car the noise is really loud to the point where its hard to hold a decent conversation without asking what they said over and over. I did however i stuffed old clothing in the hatch area were the tail lights are and that helped a little bit. My muffler burnt out thats why its soo loud, cause it didn't sound that way when I first bought it. Universal mufflers suck on rotaries. Make sure it says rx7 on the box!!

Damnit. 'S what I was afraid of.

Is Dynomat at least lighter than stock crap? Or is it better sound shielding at equal weight.

It's either ditch comforts or increase power to go fast, and increasing power decreases money.

My door seals and window channels are poor, they don't leak water, but I can hear wind noise. The insulation by the taillights is gone. I don't care.... I like listening to my exhaust and my SP engine spinning at 5K on the highway. There's not a better sound than droppin' it into 3rd and hitting redline passing somebody on the highway.

My g/f and I barely talk in the car unless we are city driving. She knows I enjoy driving my car too much to concentrate on conversation.

My advice to you.....

Respect her in her car and she'll respect you in your RX. That's all I can say..........

weatherstripping does make a big difference. i put all new in this spring... cut down the wind noise tremendously! now if only i could cut down the tire noise, the snorting intake noise, the pacesh*ter muffler noise.....

To be honest I have NO idea how much the stock matting weighs. I bet money that Dynomat will do a better job tho...

It's a really a question is if you want a True Sports car or the extra comfort and weight of a Touring Car.

Me, I'll settle for a Touring car. Performance is important to me, but so is comfort, so my RX won't be the lightest...

Road noise

So if one wanted to put dynomat in or redo the undercoating
what would the costs be?

For the dynomat......is there a kit for the rx7? Who does this?

What would the undercoating go for?

Thanks

Jim

There's a good thread on the various Dynomat-type products here.

It comes in a roll, so it has to be cut to fit, but it's not that hard. You should be able to buy it at any car-audio store, and you could probably get it installed for you by any cutom stereo shop.

As for the undercoatings, You might be able to get it done at a RustCheck or somthing similar, but I'm not sure.
I'm in the process of doing it myself. It's not hard, you can get it in a spray or brush-on. It cost somthing like $30 for a 4L can. I'm on my second can now, but I'm putting it on extra thick, especially in the wheel wells.

Hope this helps,
-Spencer

most stock sound deadening is pretty heavy, I've heard lots of numbers, anywhere from 20 lbs up to 200 lbs.. the crap isn't light, fill up a bucket and it's 20 lbs worth. If you want to ditch the stock sound deadening, I was told to go buy some dry ice and drop it on the bare soundproofing, let it cool it down a lot, then take a hammer and hit it and it'll shatter to pieces, shop-vac 'em up, and you're all good.

I had the same problem with mine. I bought sound deadener/heat disipation material from the local parts store. It came on a roll, had an aluminum foil looking backing on it. The stuff is alot lighter than the factory stuff. Definately helped with the noise and heat. As stated before, not as quiet as a Caddy, but quietened it up alot.
I have also seen the stuff in Summits catalog.

Mine used to be loud untill I went in and fixed my rust. After the fix I sealed and the used ruberized undercoating in and under the car. Much quieter. I also bought all new door, moon-roof and hatch seals. This also helped things out as far as noise.
