Some 85 GSLSE power steering questions

1. Was power steering an option or standard? (I've been reading through some threads regarding this question and the answer seems to differ per user.)

2. Fact: my GSLSE either does not have power steering or the power steering mechanism(s) is malfunctioning. How can I be sure that power steering is not installed? In other words, where is the power steering mechanism located?

3. What steps will I need to take to upgrade my GSLSE to one with power steering?

4. If choosing to upgrade, what dangers do I need to watch out for?

5. What type of power steering hardware would you recommend?

I guess that's all for the moment.

Thanks ppls!

M.

1. I have a manual steering pump from a gsl-se donor car, so I don't think it was standard
2. It is directly in front of the steering column, tucked right against the inner fender behind the strut tower. Looks like a canister with a bunch of little tubes coming out.
3. IF it is a manual steering rack and not a broken power steering pump, then all you need is the new power steering pump and that bar that bar that goes across (can't remember the name). Might want to try just adding power steering fluid
4. Don't know really
5. Stock from another gsl-se would be ideal, but I imagine any would work.

FYI, it is quite simple to determine whether it is a power steering pump or manual steering. The power one is quite large and has wires and tubes. The manual one is smaller and simpler.

Good luck, hope this helps (and I hope I'm correct )

If you want to install PS in a Non PS car you will need
a big wallet, as the parts can fetch good $
you will need the PS pump, the PS box, the complete steering column.
its a REAL pain to remove and install one.
but it can be done, I removed a complete PS unit from a donor GSL-SE and have debated on weather to install it or not.

IMO, the power steering option is a great feature on my car. I ditched the air conditioning system but wouldn't ever let go of the PS.

Max is right, it is quite spendy to even replace a bad unit, if you've got a nonworking one, let alone add the whole system. I've heard of others (David Lane) going to a 2nd gen PS unit, but it too involves big bucks and some fabrication. here's the link for more info, good luck

Hey thanks

I was to find out, with the help of a couple of diagrams, that my setup did come with the power steering option. Would have been nice though. Anyway, not to sure if I want to shell out da skrill for a power steering setup just yet.

Would like to upgrade the suspension, exhaust system and replace the carpets first. I can live without the PWS for the time being.

Thanks for the replies!!

Cool.

Hey, I have the PS pump off mine. I won't be selling it for a little while (a few days, maybe a week or two), but when I can get a picture, I'll be putting it up for sale. Haven't decided on a price, but it will be well below a new one. I'll let you know when I'm selling it.
