Smoking!! Need Help

Exclamation Smoking!! Need Help

---------'84 Rx-7 GS------------

My car is releasing LARGE blue smoke clouds at idle and throttle-back. If I am driving, and I am pushing the accellerator at all, It does not smoke. Only if I release the accellerator while driving or if I am sitting at a light does it begin to smoke. I am suspect of something with the carb or the metering pump, but I wanted to see if anyone else had seen a problem similar to this.

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Yep, classic signs of oil control o-ring wear which is a common problem with high mileage rotaries. The reason it smokes when letting off the throttle is because the sudden negative pressure draws the oil past the seals and into the combustion chamber. Even low mileage engines will do this sometimes but if you're getting large clouds of smoke then a rebuild is probably on the cards in the not too distant future. In the meantime just keep a close eye on the oil level.

my old 79 smoked heavily for several months before dying out. honestly, it may have gone longer, but the thermostat crapped out and REALLY overheated the motor. ahhhh, if only i'd known more back then, i could've probably saved it(and by now ported it and turboed it etc)
