smoking

Hello, I am a first time owner of a 84 Mazda RX-7. It was a straight trade for a 2 wheel 85 Toyota P/U. The problem is the RX smokes as if it where contracted by the millitary to hide troop activity. I have had a couple of people tell me the fuel mixture needs changed, and others tell me the valve seals need to be replaced. If any one has any detailed advice I would be really happy to hear it, so I can put my 1st/Gen. back on the road. If no ideas maybe a good rebuild company for a new 12a.

Color of smoke? What does it smell like? And I'm pretty sure that there are no valve seals on a rotary engine. haha

In any case, more details helps out alot. We're here for ya. heh

well, the valve seals are ou of the question... they should never have to be replaced.... they're non-existant

it could be coolant, fuel, or oil burning, and the color is what determines what it is...

blue = oil burning
black = too much gas
white, sweet-smelling = coolant

Do a search on 'smoking' you'll find the ifo you're looking for. Basically, if it's white smoke you've got a water seal failure, much like a head gasket in a piston engine. Blue/black smoke could be oil seal failure, or running rich.
All RX-7's puff a small amount of smoke at startup, but it should only last a few seconds.
Post back more info, we'll be glad to help!
Good Luck, & welcome aboard.

First off, welcome to the forum! Now let's get to the nitty gritty...... Well, if it smokes all the time it could be one of two things. A) it could be that the Oil Metering Pump is stuck in the open position or B) it could be that the side seals on the rotors are shot. If it's A then the fix is easy if it's B then you're looking at a engine rebuild. I'm sorry to say but my bet is on B.

At this point I would take some time to review Felix's Own General Rotary Engine FAQ . There is a ton of info packed into those pages and it'll get you educated on the rotary pretty quickly. Once you're done with the FAQ come on back here and I'm sure someone can help you with more specific questions.

The 1st Gen is a blast to drive and work on... good luck with the 'er!

EDIT: Oh yes... as Mike pointed out it could also be a coolant seal problem as well. I little more details about what kinda smoke will help a lot.
