Single Wiper Conversion

hahah, I was WAITING for that to get posted!
I don't exactly want to do it, it's more of a need type of deal. See, the drivers side wiper motor (or whatever it is on that side) and the respective hole were filled with bondo and then the car was fully repainted. This car's previous goal in life was only track, but now it's going to see occassional street use and that means I need wipers.

can you even do this on a 1st gen effectively? I think the windshield wouldn't be tall enough to get a wiper big enough to even reach the driver side
(trying so hard to be putting all kidding aside...)

Just correct the micky-mouse filling job on the drivers side wiper hole. I don't think that the geometry would work on a 1st gen, and besides, single wipers look like ***.

On the hole, installation of a single-wiper will not accomplish wiping of the windshield in rain. About the best thing you could do would be to find out if the hole can be opened up again for installation of the standard rack arm.
There is a single motor assembly located directly behind the latch mechanism (and sightly to the driver's side) which controls a long arm to drive pivots underneath both wiper arm assemblies. There's only one motor, but the wiper arm rack is what rotates the arms to wipe the windshield. The rack is removed by careful disassembly of both wiper arms, 4 10mm bolts inside the engine bay at the firewall next to the hood latch mechanism, followed by 2 more bolts within the grill portion - very obvious placement.
Once you have the rack correctly installed, be sure to grease up the nylon arm joints for everything and you're ready to reinstall the standard rack. Good luck with the project.
Also, while you have it out, be sure to rotate the end pivots that the wiper arms attach to, by hand to ensure tha they rotate freely and without binding. Any amount of tension or friction here will cause the motor to run slowly and eventually burn itself up.
I know this because I replaced my wiper rack last weekend out of necessity - the wipers began moving at an extremely sllllooooooowwww pace during rain, and eventually locked up completely. Found a seized pivot on the driver's side wiper arm. Good thing I have a parts car! HTH,

Rain X is the only As Seen on TV product that I beleive in. Damn this stuff works. Heavier the rain the better, I don't even need the wipers on at highway speeds. It's almost cause some accidents though because I've gotten distracted watching the water bead away. Go buy some.

Yeah, a single wiper wouldn't get the job done.
Although, I was just looking outside at my Rx-7. The wipers are stopped in the up position right now.
It got me thinking. If the Right Hand Drive cars have the same wiper placement as us, it would work for those cars.

Rainx is fantastic. Really amazing stuff. Still won't let you pass certification though. Then again, I'm not sure if this car will pass anyways, it has none of that stuff like.. an interior, or a muffler, or... headlights... that regular cars do
The wiper motor and etc. are gone from this car, so yeah, I'm going to have to buy one. We'll see if one will work, if not, I think I'll convert it back to two. I can remeber seeing a 7 with a single wiper before, but it was a LONG LONG time ago and I didn't really look that close. One of those "hey, that's neat" type deals. The job was done right, I can't even figure out where the hole was. I'm not really trying to get this car on the road anytime soon, so it's no big deal. I'm just glad both holes werent' filled
Thanks for the replies.
