Simple question: What's that bottle for?

I have an 85 GSL-SE and there is a plastic bottle that I can't identify. On the passenger side, right against the firewall, there's a rectangular bottle. I'ts not the big wiper fluid bottle and it's not coolant, so what is it. They don't show it in the manual.

The one underneath the wiper fluid bottle? Should be your cold-start fluid bottle IIRC.

I believe that bottle is meant to contain antifreeze which is injected into the combustion chambers (for cold weather starts). It acts as a seal on the chamber walls for the rotor apex seals to improve compression in sub-zero temperatures. Sub-zero starting assist methinks Mazda calls it. Don't have the owners manual in front of me at the moment but will check later.

I thought SE's didn't have COLD or HOT assist starts...

I haven't seen this bottle in my SE but maybe I just missed it.

California did not get the cold start assist system due to emission regs. Mazda also issued a TSB at one time telling dealers to remove the system.

We still have our own type of cold start assist on the Se which is the pellet system located on the throttle body.

For cold start you are supposed to depress the throttle down once and release. This puts the t/body on the fast idle cam.

Doc, you're confusing cold start and cold weather start (partly my fault, since I called it "cold start" above).

Cold start = pellet. Cold weather / sub zero start is a totally different system and you won't see it in that part of the US.

Manntis, thanks for the response but I am not confused.
I know what the sub-zero bottle is, I have one on my Se.

I just replied to Jasons question to educate him on the proper starting of a Se when it is cold outside. I know the nomenclature usage. You say "Tomato", I say "Tomoto", lol.

Definitely the cold start assist fluid. Just remove it. Weight reduction, ftw.

Out of all the FB's I've ever seen/worked on I don't recall ever seeing one that had a functioning pump in the bottom of the subzero bottle... I removed mine long ago.... Its useless
