ON Side Mirror Hardware

Hello,

Recently acquired some side mirrors to replace some aftermarket ones that came on my car. The mirrors I received were in pretty rough condition and all the heads were stripped and none of the bolts were stock, there was even a screw in one of the holes.

I am looking to see if anyone know the proper size bolts I need or if I can acquire them from a dealer through part numbers. There are 6 bolts for the assembly, 2 for the body, 2 for the neck, and 2 to secure the mirror to the neck. The attached diagram below doesn't seem to show the bolts that connect to the car body. The ones currently on the car holding in the aftermarket mirror are also not proper spec.

I mostly need lengths, diameter, thread, and head type.

I should note these are mirrors from an FB going onto an 79 SA body.

Thanks in advance!

I recently had the same problem so I used some of the remaining original stock screws to find new ones. I totally struck out at the local hardware stores, they don't seem to have "automotive" hardware, and the local car parts stores didn't have a clue. But an RX-7 friend mentioned this company for a source of any hard to find hardware:

Mcmastercarr.com

They ain't cheap and you need to buy by the box, not the individual piece, but now I'm well supplied in the correct screws and bolts, which are listed in the invoice below:

You can order the same parts from Mcmastercarr, or use the item descriptions to see if you can find them somewhere else for less. Also if you like I can put together a set from the supply I purchased and give you a fair price on only the ones you need, let me know.

Actually McMaster Carr was my go to option which is why I was asking for details on the screws themselves. It looks like you have already done all the homework for me. And am definitely interested in paying you for a set instead of resourcing them all myself, seems like a win-win.

We can discuss in private message!

Sounds good, send me a pm.

If anyone else is interested let me know, I'll divvy up the ones I've got into mirror repair kits.

Looks like about $3 per mirror for the six bolts and screws needed (50 cents per unit), plus whatever shipping would be.

Another 'generic' source consideration: ACE Hardware. Maybe I am just lucky but our little neighborhood (Sedona, AZ) shop has an amazing assortment of fixture hardware that includes both stainless steel and zinc METRIC. I have found a great assortment (sold individually) of fasteners for the whole SA, from trim to suspension, Even a surprising number of bits that swap right in on my vintage Ducati motor bike!

Ace Hardware stores do stock an amazing variety of nuts, bolts, screws and other fasteners and it's usually my go to place when I need something specific, which I did when trying to find bolts for my mirrors.

But unfortunately I totally struck out on all three bolt types, they are very peculiar to the FB power mirror design. Still worth checking your local Ace and other hardware stores, you might get lucky!

Here's some pictures of the screws needed for the FB mirrors.

If your mirror is wobbly, these screws are probably the problem.

These are the packages I got from Mcmastercarr:

This is the set you need to do one mirror:

Hey Ray Green,

I sent you a PM following up but haven’t heard back from you since. Let me know if this is something you’re able get them mailed this week.

If not I’ll just buy the packs myself from mcmaster carr

off topic but does the door panel need to be removed on the fb to install the mirror? Or are they like the SA where they attach from the outside?

AFAIK all RX7 1st gen mirrors attach externally, incl Electrics. Doors have attachment nuts hard-mounted internally to exterior holes.

I can attest to this, just did this on my 7. I'd use some blue loctite. I didn't first time and they vibrated loose. I was afraid of over tightening them.

Yes, don't overtighten, those 40 year old threads are precarious.

And yes, its all done from the outside. Those flathead screws secure the mirror assembly to the pedestal.

The oval head screws secure the pedestal to the base.

And the pan head screws secure base to the body.
