Should i take on this project rx7?
I always listen to everybody on this forum and take everyone's opinion very seriously. Right now nobody knows anything about the car so i will call him today and ask some questions like if it runs and If both cars don't run then i will pass. The 81 rx7 for $750 is hard to go wrong with definitely with the racing beat carb. The carb alone is worth that.
Yeah i hear you but once i get my heart set on something it is hard to let go. I am listening to all you guys especially you kansascityrepu i am calling in in a hour to see if it the red rx7 runs if it does maybe i will go down there and see if i can get the red 81 for $500.
He called me back here is what info i got from him the 81 red rx7 has new shocks, tires, plugs, breaks, and muffler. The gas tank has also been taken off to clean but needs to be put back on and the car doesn't run he told me he got this rx7 set from a older man at a estate sale he says the 81 ran great and went into storage for awhile and now it doesn't run and nobody has tried anything to fix it so it could be a very simple fix or i huge problem. He doesn't have the time to do any work to them and he wants them gone he said he just wants to make a few bucks or break even so i might be able to score both for under $1000. So what do you guys think i want your honest opinion and i will listen thanks guys!
If he got them at an estate sale then he didn't pay that much for them. At this point you can only take them for their current condition which is non-running and scrap price. All this stuff about used to run and might run is wishful thinking.
I'd offer $300 but only in person after looking them over really well. Remember, this is a negotiation, you can always go higher. My thought is that he bought them to get them to run but can't and they need work. Based on what you found out, I think he just wants to unload them. Be ready to walk away and not seem eager.

$300 for both or for the red 81? I would consider the 81 better then scrap price with all the work done to it but the engine not running is a huge gamble can you guys give me any tips on how to check while i am out there if the engine is in good shape or not?
For both - This is where the deal making comes in. The guy will either laugh and stick to his price or he will shoot you a better price. If he sticks to his price I would walk away. The idea is to settle on a price that does not leave you in a world of hurt if the engine are toast. Remember, this is a negotiation. If he gives a lower price, you know he will come down even lower so counter that offer midway.
I bought a 1986 RX-7 that had recently had $1800 of dealer service for $300. And $300 this was my first offer to him and he took it. When the guy drove the car home from getting the work done at the Mazda dealership, after sitting in storage for a long time, it broke on him right on the high way. He had it towed home and got tired of throwing money at it. Come to find out, all I had to do was put in a new (used) flywheel and clutch. Cost me $200 to get it going. I sold the car for $2100 even after disclosing how much I had in the car. The fact that the $1800 in service was verifiable made it easier.

After thinking about it some more i am going to take your guys advice and hold off for a better rx7 that is mostly complete for a little more money. I think in the end it will be worth it to find one mostly done then to buy one that might need alot of work.
