If you are shooting flames you have a car that sents unburned fuel through the exhaust, where it burns. That means your car is having more fuel then oxigen to burn it, in other words you are wasting your money.
And you might damage the exhaust system...
This can occur while downshifting when the engine/carb needs a little time to "adjust" itself, but it won't happen really often when your car is perfectly finetuned.
My 84 used to have that, with a stock carb and stock exhaust (which is without cats in Europe), so you do need mods for this!
The same engine is now in my Mariah with a Mikuni carb and a RB exhaust and it doesn't spit flames anymore. But it does make much more power!
The race cars that have that are doing this because very same reason, but race teams don't really care for milage The reason to keep fuel coming in there is to be able to accelerate fast again after decelarating and keeping the engine from starving. This cannot be compared to road cars though.
So if it spits flames, it ain't making power, it's wasting energy!

you won't damage your exaust as long as you have a nice one. most rx-7's backfire, it's ok.
