Shifter Return Spring

Yes i've looked in the heynes manual, FSM, mazdatrix videos and stuff, but and it not the first time that I had put it in. Now thats out of the way, I went to put it in today, and the spring somehow popped out of place. Where is the one end suppose to hook up too? I tried searching but most of the pictures have been gone from all the threads too so that doesn't help neither.

Are you saying the shifter return spring is already installed and just popped out of place? If you, you can push it toward the hardenned tab at the side of the metal cube thing that the shifter sits in.

I changed a spring last Saturday and couldn't figure out how I did it last time. I stared at it for like 10 minutes then finally the duh moment and I put it in and it worked fine testing it with the shifter in place. I didn't take any pictures with the side cover off. It is now back on with RTV. I could take a picture through the shifter hole. All you'd see are both ends of the spring.

The way it works is when you push the shifter into the hole, it presses the return spring to the side against the hardened blued tab. Sorry, I don't recall which side it is since the tranny is out and sticking up in the air). As you know, it returns the shifter to the 3-4 position whenever you pull it to the 1-2 position and let go.

Ya the spring is already in there and not too sure how it was seated. If you could take pictures that would be great. I know the parts that moves it back to the passenger (the part that actually returns the shifter) sit about in the middle of the hole where the shifter sits. If you have the transmission already out of the car, Anyway of getting detailed pictures of where it sits on the other side. Makes me wish I had kept my spare tranny.

Somebody will have to tell me whether I set the spring up correctly or not. I was able to install the shifter and it did return correctly so I guess I got it in there right.

That's how my other one was. When I took the side cover off there was a deep wear mark in it from all the rubbing of the stock spring. If I would have known, I probably could have moved the stock spring back into the correct position and used it, but I already removed the cover and had the new spring sitting there.

that spring wraps around the remote shifter rod. So if you think its an easy swap, there are more to it.

I shortened an '81-'83 shifter for my bro's RX-4 wagon.

Wacky, I see you have your shifter return spring in the way that I thought it should go. Funny my new one didn't want to go in that position. Should I try to force it into that position?

If it snaps back into neutral, then there is no need.

Ok, thanks.

by the way, the new spring looked different from the old spring. Maybe mine is in there correctly.

I dotn know if this is the original spring for the GSL-SE tranny. Maybe I mixed them up since I took apart several bad trannies to fit the trash can.

Jeff, from all of the springs I've seen, your's may be upside down. You should only see 1 wire, not 2.

Sam, the spring, if worn, can set in the box a bit loose. The trick is to make sure that when inserting the shifter handle, the wire is on the right side of the shifter.

I hooked it up properly earlier on today. I had to open the service cover of the side there. I did it from inside the car. but thats probably because I had the dash out. went back in within second once I had good acess to it

Well I'm perplexed. Maybe I'll take the side cover back off and try to get the straight part over the corner.
