umm try the t-bar underneath the air filter housing, on the passenger side, near the firewall , and theres a t-bar that has to be hooked on to hooks, go check the thread about the 84 rx-7 lacking power, and look for a pic of the t-bar, this is what happend to mine at first but i hooked it back up and got my power back, this might solve your problem, hopefully

it sounds like it could be your t bar or a vaccuum leak. any eratic idling or refusal to drop to normal idle when at a stop?

Letting off, then getting back on it and having power is a symptom of a clogged fuel filter. When is the last time it was changed?

Yep, you're running into fuel flow problems, which either indicates a clogged filter, a crimped fuel line or a bad fuel pump. Change the filter and make sure all the rubber lines are in good shape. If it still loses power and then comes back then your fuel pump is probably going.

At which point you should do a fuel volume and pressure test and if ok, carburetor is next to tackle.

"looks new" isn't good enough. "NEW" is the only acceptable answer here. It's a 20+ year old car, with 20+ years worth of gas, from who knows where. It doesn't take long at all to plug up the filter. I typically change mine when they still look new. You're not running autolite plugs are you?

The fuel filter costs about 3 bucks, and takes about ten minutes to swap out. This is a small investment, but one that should definitely be made if you don't know the age/mileage of the current filter. Would you rather rebuild your carb, only to find out that it was your filter; or change your filter and discover that your carb is fine?

Stock Nikki carb? Then you wont see the secondaries open. The secondaries only open under vacuum pressure when the engine is under load. You won't see it just by looking down into the carb and flooring the pedal.

Do what the other guys said and start with the fuel filter.

Look in the FAQ section for the mechanical secondaries instructions. Its pretty easy to do, and assures that they will open, but puts you in control (via the gas pedal) of when they open. However, chances are that yours are fine as is...

Well if you have access to a dyno, you can see if the secondaries open or not. Otherwise is the old trick of riding the front bumper with no hood on while a friend drives the car

You're going to have to trust that we know what we're talking about here.

This is a common issue. Until you do the steps outlined by Kentesu, myself and crad, you're just wasting your time.

Do like Kentetsu said and get rid of that vacuum **** and switch it to mecanicals. Hell you can do it with a piece of wire and you never have to worry about it again. No secondary problems ever again.
