-SE vs S4 differences

Ok, I been asking some questions in the 2nd Gen forum cause I got this N/A engine (short block) out of a '87 and was taking it apart to replace the water seals and blah blah blah..... Anyway, its a 6 port N/A, and I noticed that the 4 oil injectors on my engine are located on the block itself. 1 at each rotor housing, and 2 on the center plate. All the 2nd Gen guys say they have 1 on each rotor housing and 2 in the lower manifold. one guy said I had a 84-85 SE short block. I heard that the SE's were all 4 ports. I guess it could have been a rebuild, but the owner thought it was the original engine. Can any of you SE drivers tell me what some of the physical differences are between a SE and S4?

the water seal locations ... SE's are in the rotor housings, the 86+ engines have the seals in the side housings.

What about the oil injector location? I have 2 87 N/As and both have 2 oil injectors in the center plate.

Here are some of the pics of the oil injectors in the center plates and rotor housings.

This one is from an '87. I circled the holes where the oil injector are in my other engine.

This is the rear rotor housing that is removed from the short block. Again, I circled the oil injector

This is a 2nd gen shortblock? It has a CAS, for one thing. Is the answer your where asking? Or was it something else.?

If you need more info, I have my old shortblock in the garage and could check for you.

I was told that this is a 84-85 SE motor because the center plate had the injectors and not the lower manifold like in a S4. Did SE's have a dizzy cause mine has the CAS, as you can see on the front of the block.

All Fuel Injected 13B's have Fuel Injector Bungs on the center plate from 84 on. Even my 95 Cosmo engine has them. SE's did have a Dizzy, and 86+ engines have a CAS.

Here is the 87 center plate injectors on the short block. It has the lines hooked up to the OMP and had the vaccuum lines on the top, but they are removed. Also, it has the CAS.

Sorry I delete the first pic, it was an accident.

the picture that you called center plate.jpg = the fuel injector holes

housing oil injector.jpg = oil injection on the rotor housing

oil injectors.jpg is sort of unclear, but it seems to be another picture of the fuel injector holes.

there are only 4 oil inection holes, 1 on each rotor housing and 2 are on the lower intake manifold, that goes for the the SE and the Gen II motors. the two holes in the intermediate housing are for the primary fuel injectors.

Ok, so if I want to run a carb, I have to plug those holes in the center plate right? I found the pic of the fuel system in my FSM and circled the primary injector, but the block I got had the OMP lines running to those fuel injectors. I guess thats a goof on the last owners part, who knows. All the injectors look alike, so can I use the two on the center plate as oil injectors in the lower manifold?

yeah, if you want to run a carb, they have to be plugged. if you run a downdraft system, you can just leave the injection block (with the injectors in place) and not worry about it. however, if you run a sidedraft that sucks air from the left side of the car, like the Dell'Orto, the injector block will not clear the carbie. on that issue, i can give you 2 options ...

the proper way: RB sells a fuel injection plug kit (about $40)

the ghetto way: stick two dimes in the holes to lay flat, then put some epoxy in over them.

guess which one i did?

Ha ha! I rather spend $0.20 instead of $40 any day!

Thanks for all the help. I drove a 1st gen for a long time, and never took apart a rotary engine. I have a haynes manual and a FSM. I figure that i'll take my time, ask questions here, and I'll be all set.
