SE power steering in a GS
SE power steering in a GS
I hope this doesnt' turn into a flaming thread. I know most of you hate power steering in our cars, but I'm putting one in anyway. It's going into an 83 GSL. I have everything from an SE, including the column. My question is how do I bypass the variable assist sensor. Obviously my 83 harness has no harness connector, nor does my ECU. Can I just leave it unplugged and have full assist all the time (that's what I want) or do I have to wire it to power, or what.. Thanks in advance for your help.

wouldnt power steering take care of the sloppy steering, i have thought of this too but no money soo good luck and you should do a little write up id be interested in it down the road.

The only over correcting you do in power steering is when you dont know the vehicles traits, ie, oversteer in the years up until 84 when they changed the
suspension and had a better neutral steer. This same nuetral steer can be achieved with the proper sway bars on the pre 84 models. As far as controlling the
assist, its only there for when you are at low speeds to increase pressure for
easier turning, say into a parking place. There is a seperate control unit used with this, but is not needed for your application. Also the se's gear box with p/s does not have the inherent excessive play problem that the manual steering ones have.
So i say, put that p/s in and enjoy it. rx7doctor

So doc.. are you saying that I can leave that harness connector unplugged with no worries. Will I get a consistent feel to the wheel without it? Thanks everyone.. BTW, not everyone likes to "feel the road". Some of us just wanna have fun with a little car and be comfortable doing it.
connector
Yes that is correct, and you will still feel the road but have more responsive steering. And for you guys out there that still think that p/s is for wimps, one of the most reponsive road feeling vehicle in the world is the BMW's and they all have p/s, LOL. rx7doctor
