SE Mods?

I have owned a 12A since new in 80. I have done quite a few mods on the car, and I am very familiar with what can be done to increase performance. My question is what can be done to a GSL-SE to increase performance that I might not know about, or be thinking of.
Thanks,
hanman

me too! I have had 12a cars for YEARS and finally got an SE! Are there any non-obvious tricks out there. I am thinkning of just going to aftermarket FI and seeing how much power I can get out of the rest of the stock setup.

There are many mods available for the SE. Just look around on the Internet and you're bound to come across some. Check out MazdaTrix or RacingBeat. Do you know any 12A mods? Let me know, thanks.

Out of a stock port 13B with FI you're not going to get much improvement over the the factory FI. It's an early generation, but it actually works quite well as long as they are seated right and not flooding out your engine.

Best Bang for the buck for a stock port GSL-SE (as in all N/A RX-7's)
Good header (Racing Beat)
Good Midpipe (Straight)
Good Muffler (Primaflow)

You can remove the factory Air Filter, and make your own
Cold-Air Box with a cone filter as well.

Make sure the actuators on the 5 & 6 ports work properly and at the right RPM for that nice torque low end, and screamin high end.

Get an MSD 6AL Box, with some MSD Blaster coils or some 2nd Gen Coils. for good spark.

Bump the timing (a little bit advanced):

If you're into autocrossing, then invest in a lighter flywheel for quicker engine response.

These things will get you enough power to get yourself into plenty of trouble, and smoke every stock 12A out there pretty bad.

If you do the above, and remove the FI, get a Dellorto sidedraft and you will have approx 180-185 hp with PLENTY of torque over the entire powerband. Whereas if you go with the other carb setups, you will have to lose the actuators (don't do that, as that is THE sweetest thing about 6-port 13B's) and have a Peaky HP curve like the 12A's.

I Luv my SE, and all the other ones I had previously..

cool:

Thumbs up

Directfreak has provided a great summary of SE upgrade mods (leaving out porting of course). Never forget how much there is to upgrade suspension-wise once you get more power! It seems like it never ends!

You're not kidding either. I have been looking into getting an updated suspension for my SE to TII project.

I actually need info on the Eibach springs. Good? Suck?

I wanted Tokico Springs to go with Tokico Illuminas, but they are discontinued.

Eibach is what I have been recommended. Also, Do I REALLY need new sway bars and such?

All I (think I) want is:

to upgrade to Polyeurethene bushings all around with the aforementioned springs and struts.

I think that would be fine for a street driving Turbo first Gen.

Ideas?

The throttlebody mod (2ndard removal coolant bypass)
is another good mod for inproved throttle response
also having your injectors cleaned on a high mileage motor can help. nothing worse than an injector clogged 13% like mine was.

I have some on my SE right now. I don't like them. I have them used in conjuntion with adj Koni's front and rear. It feels like a race car. DUH!!!!
But, I love my bigger sway bars front and rear. I have talked with others that about agree that softly sprung and heavy bars are the way to go on the street.
I'll probably head that way soon.

where you remove the (choke) plates, which stay closed while the engine warms up, then get in the way when its warmed up, they open via vacuum then. which is slow. when removed throttle response is much better. and there is no coolant line going to the TB, thus a bit cooler intake charge

Thanks guys,
I was familiar with most of these mods.
I was curious if the TB mod could be done just like the second gens.
Basically, the same mods as the 12A.
Man, I have too many REX's. I can't afford all these mods that "I just have to have"!
My 12A mods:
Yaw Carb and ported manifold
Carter fuel pump/Holley regulator
2nd gen alternator and fuse block
RB header and presilencer
SS brake lines
Front sway bar
Enkei wheels
Complete from bare metal paint and body work.
New windshield and glass moonroof
Tinted windows
Alpine CD
Rebuilt engine stock port (at the time, I didn't know about street ports)
PIAA driving lights
Momo steering wheel (which I will probably never put on)
K&N Air filter

None. I'm going back to the stock springs with the Koni's and the big sway bars. I want a better ride for the street.

I have the Eibach coils and Tokico 5way struts/shocks
its a very nice ride, and can be turned to ride like a race car or a caddy.
I have yet to install my RB front sway bar.

I'm running stock bars with stock rubber bushings everywhere, but tokico springs and tokico HP's (aka blues) all around. The ride is plenty go-kart-ish. On nasty pavement it's enough to rattle the molars out of your jaw, but for a weekend / auto-x / pimp car, it's fine with me.

For average street driving daily, pray for good pavement
