SE flooding problem..

Okay guys, here's the scenario..

I got an '84 GSL-Se. It's been off the road for a little over 2 years (since I got it, 'cause of rust in the wheelwells). I started it usually twice a week in that time period, to keep it running. However, I haven't been able to keep that routine for last handful of months, due to other, umm.. more-important causes. I noticed that when I didn't run it regularly it would flood whenever I'd try to start it. The only way to get it running would be to then pull the plugs, crank engine over and wirebrush the plugs. I'm kinda getting sick of that.. he he. Some back ground, original 165k mile engine, probably injectors that have never been pulled, I put all new battery cables on about two months ago and a rebuilt starter. Is it possible vacuum leaks (when I got it, I seperated the big black air funnel to clean it out, don't ask) could be causing this, or do I have leaking inkectors or what? Any ideas would really be appreciated... thanks...

Vacuum leaks won't prevent it from starting. If the battery is not weak and you have decent compression, it's the injectors. You can send them out but I just sprayed carb cleaner through them while applying 12v for 1 second bursts about 15 times. That was about 8 years ago and it runs fine, has not flooded since.

some gsl-se's seem to flood all the time.

check out the 'common 13b starting problems' in the tech section of this site: http://www.rx7.com/tech/unflood-se.html

yu might be able to get away with just doing the 'quick' method instead of taking out the plugs all the time. it's still a pain but it's a lot quicker n'cleaner

My advice? Give the little hoss the MMO treatment...
Squirt some MMO into the plug holes, and a quart into the fuel tank. By the way, speaking of fuel, how old is this fuel in your tank since you only start every so often over the past 2 years?

Denny, from the 'ol corncrib....

Yea, I forgot to mention... I did the MMO treatment yesterday, before I posted.. didn't help at all... I'm gonna give it a go again tomorrow evening, and see if she lights up...

Someone once told me there is a glitch in the EMS of the SE. Yeah. A glitch. He said that when you start one up it has a cycle that the cpu runs thru and if you cut it off before it runs its cycle next time you go to start it it floods because the system thinks it still feeding fuel to a running motor. All I know is that I make an attempt to make sure my SE is always run to temp before I cut it off. Like moving it around the driveway. I never just start it,move it,and cut it off. Now 'knock on wood' this has kept my 85 w/200,000+ mi from flooding as often. But this is not a cure all.
