Saw a GSL today

Hi, Today I went and saw a 1985 GSL. Originally it was an Ohio car, but the seller bought it and brought it back to Illinois in October. Since then he has had the apex seals replaced, the carbs rebuilt, the distributor points and plugs replaced, changed the battery, tuned the engine , repaded the brakes, and the clutch replaced. The paint was original and even the pinstripes looked great. There was no sign of rust or any misuse. Everything worked too. However the seller is asking $4,900.00 is this a resonable price considering all of the work he has done?

P.S. (the only reason he's selling is becuase his wife told him he had too many toys and needed to get rid of one)

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Too much. Offer him $3000 cash. Setting the price at $4900 is equal to not actually selling it, but making the wife think you're at least trying to get rid of it.

3k is way too much. You should be able to get it for less than 2k.

Hey now... I'd definitely like to think that anyone who wanted a solid 85 GSL with new interior and clean lines would pay $3K+ for mine. Not planning on selling it, but if I did, the biznatches best be ready to toss some cash down.

I bought an 85GSL with 49k for $1700 in SF last summer. Excellent interior (small wear on driverseat), good exterior (LF bash, no dings, somewhat dull silver finish), slipping clutch. Nice car, I drive it daily.

I've done a few things, like change ALL fluids, new plugs, wires cap, etc. Recharged AC.

I've got a new Bonerz cat and aftermarket muffler to go in when i have time. Maybe i combine that with clutch job. Plan to lower driver seat an inch when i repair leather wear.

I'd want $3000 for it when it's ready. Oh yeah, I also have a new LF fender for it. Think I'll doll it up with a new paint job and try getting $4k. (but let's see, with $100 in tuneups, $170 for AC, $500 in cat+muffler, $500 for clutch and $1000 for paint job, I'll have $3970 in it, for a big profit of $30! Maybe I ought to sell it cheap to one of my kids).

It's a very nice example.

How many miles on that GSL you saw? Was it a midwest car or CA? My GSL was a NW car in Seattle, but moved to CA years ago. No rust.

Well it only had 64,000 miles, and it was originaly from Ohio but the guy who bought it brought it back to Illinois from there. Also the paint was very shiny and ORIGINAL with the gas door sticker too, not to mention everything works (even cruise control). You can really tell that it was taken care of. The body didn't even look like it had been driven in bad weather, cause i got down on my hands and knees and looked under it and in all the wheel wells and didn't find anything to suggest otherwise (even on the back side of the lip on the rear fenders). I also think that part of the reason for the high price has to do with the area, FBs are a lot harder to find here in Illinois especially in that kind of shape. If I were to get one from out of state i'd have to drive it (not what I want to do with an unfamiliar car) or have it shiped ($$) to get that good of a condition. Plus I my dad has already said that he doesn't want another project as we have already restored a volkswagen (it took 6 years), therefore he doesn't want a body in poor shape.
